It's impossible to enjoy driving these days.

Most of the problem with traffic in construction zones is caused by those yahoos who think they have some sort of right to blast down to the last millimeter of their lane that is ending and then someone should just let them in out of the goodness of their heart.

Actually, no one should let them in out of respect for those who merged 2 miles back when the sign first indicated the right lane was closing.

Have the police enforce that. If you are caught merging in a fashion that causes others to slow, you get a $500 ticket.

I used to agree with you, but then I learned two things:

1 If traffic is tied up, it is faster to merge one for one where the lane ends.

2 The lane that is closing is still a lane. Other people are going to use it, I might as well too.

I saw this effect first hand a while ago on I 80. There was a bridge being repaired, and it went down to one lane. The a.hole truckers caused a 12 mile backup because no less than five of them decided to "police" the left lane, which caused the backup to stretch further and further back. There was something like 4 exits blocked by this backup. How many people stuck in this would not have been, if everyone just drove normally and they were able to exit when they wanted to?

It is a lane until it isn't any more. Use it.

I've seen the opposite. When they removed a lane of traffic for construction, traffic across the PSB in St Louis going eastbound into IL got better during the construction. Since there were fewer lanes, there were fewer merge events and we were able to pass through faster, until they reopened the lane.

The most efficient way to use the road is to merge as soon as possible. This way, you get to merge at speed and the through lane is allowed to remain at close to the speed limit.

As soon as you have folks coming to a stop, when they merge, they have a greater impact on the traffic that already merged.

The capacity of the road is effectively the capacity at the narrowest part, I.E. where the lane ends. To use that stretch of road at it's fullest capacity, you have to keep the traffic moving.

Anything that slows the traffic in that narrow stretch, such as those who slow the traffic down by merging reduces the capacity and causes traffic tie ups.

If everyone would merge at the earliest opportunity, ultimately more traffic would pass over a given time interval due to there being a smaller reduction in traffic speed.

Yes, some of them are jerks about it and will hold up an entire stretch of highway for minutes on end, but at the same time, I've seen a few trucks try and pass, realize they're holding up a huge line of traffic, and slow back down behind the truck they're trying to pass and let everyone by until traffic clears.

Remember, every single consumer item you used today was brought to you on a truck. Give the guys a little slack; they have one of the hardest jobs.

Just because they have an important role in the economy does not give them a right to steal the road or violate traffic laws. Passing at 61 in a 70 zone while blocking 30 cars behind you, is impeding traffic and against the law. School teachers have an important job too; so should they be given special permission to drive 90 mph or run red lights to get to work faster? Those truckers are just plain selfish

Show me a statute where it is illegal.

Impeding traffic would be stopping on the highway and blocking vehicles from moving entirely.

Yea, DUH. It's their job to drive as many miles as possible. Waiting for minutes on end for traffic to clear each day adds up to thousands of potential miles not earned over the course of a year. They're not breaking the law by passing slowly.

Once again, you can sit there and curse and bang your steering wheel, give them the bird, etc. It's not going to stop them. It's only going to raise your blood pressure.

Also

I 22400(a) Minimum speed, impeding normal flow of traffic.
I 22400(b) Minimum speed, below signposted limit.

Speed limit on the highway that runs north and south of my small town is 70. The minimum is 45. Below that you must have your flashers on or be displaying a slow-moving vehicle symbol.

That said, when I'm in my Torino, I drive 55mph. Remember the old saying? Stay Alive - Drive 55? That's what I do. Not because *I* want to stay alive, but because I want my *engine* to stay alive by not burning so much oil at higher rpm's. 2000rpm at 55mph is a rough guess going by a rear axle calculator I found online. Anything over that and there is visible oil smoke and a change in pitch and timbre of the rocker/lifter noise.

So if I'm going 55, and you want to go 70, one of three things will happen.

a) if there are no guardrails, culverts, abandoned cars, tractors, small furry animals, or piles of grain in the way on the shoulder, I'll move over (keeping my speed) and you can sail right on by...I'll usually do this given a clear shoulder before you even get within fifty feet of me

2) you will fly by me in the opposite lane of traffic because there's no one on this stinking road, ever, and you have all the room in the world to pass

D) you'll sit behind me and stew while I don't move over because either you came up on me like a jerk and I don't feel like moving over if you're going to weave back and forth and throw your hands up and flash your lights at me...or it's raining so hard I can't see more than two hundred feet in front of me and I'm not getting out of your way...or there's already a line of cars in front of me following an oversized load (we get a lot of those blades for wind turbines traveling through here)

So that's that. I drive under the speed limit. I generally do NOT get on the interstate. I'll give way when it's safe. Otherwise, if you take an attitude with me, I hope you like looking at this:

Because that is all you are going to see until I pull off into Love's in Hillsboro or onto my street in Malone.

Forget all the posts here...I think Helen said it best. Bless her!

A tight schedule doesn't excuse rude driving habits. And like I said earlier, we'd be much better off as a nation if we'd ship more of our goods via rail instead of trucking everything. Yes, truckers do have a difficult job, but again, this doesn't excuse rude driving habits. They don't own the roads and they shouldn't drive like they do.

I guess you don't get the line cutting thing, do you?

Holding up traffic, whether stopped, or just slowed down IS impeding. Legal or not, it's still wrong and rude.

Exactly, grampi. Unless one is in the right lane, "you" are impeding traffic if there's a line behind "you" and "you" really need to move over. And even in the right lane, there are certain minimums one has to adhere to.

Anyone that wants to enforce traffic laws needs to apply at their local police academy and do it legally.

Even if there's another truck in the right lane, it's impeding when the trucker in the left lane could've waited until he wouldn't be holding anyone up to make his pass, but he chooses to hold up traffic anyway.

You sound like the type of person I enjoy lauging at when you've been pulled over by the state troopers! Renegade drivers like you usually end up with no license or in the morgue.

You may THINK you're safer, but you are causing the roads to be unsafe for others who are traveling near the posted presumably 65 or 70 mph speed limit.

Going 10 or 15 mph below the posted limit is just as unsafe (actually worse in most situations) as going 10 or 15 mph over the posted speed limit.

Well thats your opinion. Got any facts to back it up.

Actually WA state did a study on this exact thing and found it was causing the most road rage incidents and just as many accidents as speed and have really started to enforce the law of the left lane for passing and no slower than 10 mph from the posted speed limit on limited access highways like I-90, I-5 and I-405. They have found it has redued accidents, kept the flow of traffic fairly smooth and reduced road rage incidents.

Washingtons RCW on the subject of left lane lollygaggers.

Read paragraph 4. It specifically says "impede"
In addition to that, the law also touches on something else they do in Washington. If you are in the right lane and someone is trying to merge and you can safely move to the left lane to allow that person to merge it is the law to do so.
Section 2(c) of the keep right except to pass law.
