It looks like electric vehicles are going to be shoved down our throats

Sometime (soon) there wont be a choice. I think that's what he is getting at.
If the manufacturers can build electric vehicles and price them the same as gas powered vehicles then I would have no problem buying one. For me the problem always been there is a price premium on electric vehicles and even on hybrid vehicles. I'm all for saving money at the gas pump.

He probably won’t live that long,

only place where that might happen in any timeframe is Southern California and it’s not hard to move

A comprehensive plan would be nice.
Define problem(s)
Lay out technical boundaries Ex: Electric milk wagons=proven, electric moving vans=still some questions
Establish goals be they lofty or modest....then stick to them
Realize the "answer" will be a mix....just like everything else in life
Establish real transportation alternatives....then build them
C'mon people, where are the adults here? Why this "this can never work" mindset?

I keep seeing announcements form the automakers saying they want to be all electric by 20XX. What about what the public wants? Do they think they can produce any type of vehicle they want and people will just buy them? I'm sure some people will warm up to electric vehicles, but there are also those who won't...I can tell you I have no desire to own one...
Grampi-
Yes, the vast public will buy whatever the auto makers ad programs tell them that is what they want to drive. I remember reading years ago the auto industry was spending $13b/year telling ppl what car they really wanted. Very effective mass marketing.

IN BEFORE THE LOCK!!!
Seriously, I would consider replacing the toaster taxi xB (wife's local puddle jumper) with electric or plug-in Hybrid-but the prices need to go down to cover the potential battery failure down the road-at 16 years old it would have needed a BIG $ hybrid battery already!

The issue is going to be:if there's no competition from (outlawed) fossil fuel powered cars, then there will be no incentive to sell cheaper electrics! The jury is still out on electric grid effects, where is all the extra electric generation going to come from? We're talking BILLIONS of KWH to replace all fossil fueled passenger vehicles, and the grid is shaky & undermaintained as it is!

Yeah whatever, the conversion to EV in the US is a long road, I wouldn’t worry about it, especially not in non-coastal regions.

Also nobody wants the crossovers/minivan clones they make but people still buy them.

Personally I would own a cheap EV but my little antique burns $200 of gas annually and the taxes for an EV are an extra $665 for title + registration which costs more than my fuel.

Not wasting my time on one again until taxes and insurance get fixed and if they don’t fix the wrongheaded taxes
government has made my future car buying decisions for me.

Most areas tax hybrids and EVs in such a way that a normal economy car is cheaper to own as the taxes are about equal in cost to annual fuel use.

In fact Virginia in trying to make every car cost the same amount to drive so it’s only worth driving 10mpg race cars and semi’s since you gain no savings by driving an efficient car.
FWIW I'm from VA and don't mind paying a little extra for highway use tax if it means fixing our death trap roads here. The stretch of I-64 between Richmond and VA beach is awful in the summer with vacationers as well as I-81 with all the truck traffic. It still probably won't get done, though.

GM will know long before 2035 if this EV only policy will work. It will come down to sales, and survival of the company. If they don't sell, the company won't survive. Personally, I will continue to drive ICE vehicles, but I would consider a hybrid.

Have you driven, say, a Model 3? Perhaps you might think differently, perhaps not.
No worries either way; there will be plenty of cars around for the forseeable future.

Then don’t buy one.

There’s this thing called “technology” and battery power is going to get better.

Obviously not all car makers are going to be all electric. There’s going to be gas or hybrid options.

Read an interesting article about Tesla today. First I am a fn of electric vehicles, but the infrastructureis not ready and there are still issued to be resolved. So basically this article says that Tesla loses money on every electric vehicle it builds and sells. The real moneymaker is selling ev credits to other manufacturers (3.3 billion usd). Tesla has an all electric fleet so they can sell as many ev credits they want. It's on the CNN Buisiness website.

You may not have a concern about the distance an electric car offers but I sure am. I will go electric when the tech exceeds the current gasoline or diesel standard. We are seriously lacking electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the US to accommodate a massive push like this.

Curious... Can you charge at home?
Are you in a remote area?
Tesla has built a large charging network and is always expanding.

You can search your area here: SuperCharger Map
Good luck!

I would also offer this. Before we hit the auto world with this, why isn't there a concerted effort to put heavy taxes on private planes and corporate planes? It sure does take a lot of fuel to get a jet plane up in the air. Our own US climate zar has his own plane. Fly like the majority of us have to and help do your part.

I love Decaprio and his movies. But he spewed the same nonsense and then hops a private plane to Europe. There needs to be some realism here.

I'd add.....where is the government? Sad Tesla has to create its own infrastructure.

Lots of people, including me, have said they will consider an EV when they reach price parity with current petrol cars. Well I've come to the conclusion that it's never going to happen, at least not in the way you might think. Battery prices have come down but the curve is flattening off and EV's are still near double the price of an equivalent petrol model. I read something recently that suggested the only way EV's will reach parity with petrol cars is if they meet in the middle because petrol cars got more expensive due to the increased complexity of meeting ever tightening emissions regulations. That rings true to me and I conclude that buying a car is going to get more expensive whether we like it or not.

Tesla Model 3s are not more expensive than comparable luxury ICE cars, according to how the market classifies them.
Model 3 Standard Range (263 mile range, 0 to 60 in 5.3 seconds) starts at $36,500. And you will pay virtually nothing in maintenance.
It will likely hold its value better and will be more dependable.
Both have benefits; it depends on what fits your lifestyle.
And ultimately what you want to drive.
