Is this too much wheel bearing play?

Any amount is too much. Had a terrible experience while i was in a friends car and the hub locked up solid. long interesting story but i don't think anyone wants a paragraph.

Not on this design. Many years ago I remember Renault used a spacer washer behind the nut to preload the bearing but I haven't seen one like that in years.

justr received my new rear wheel bearing, including the hub. the bearing races can move when the spindle nut is not installed. got to work now but will try to show later. It's very similar in design to the versa front bearing

Try it after tightening to spec. I did a VW last week they want it torqued to 200 nm to insure the hub is seated properly then back it off and re tighten to 50 nm and 60 degrees.
Yes, there may be a very slight amount of movement but nothing like what the OP has, I would be surprised if that amount of movement was considered "normal".

THESE Timken are made in Canada. Pressing them in now.

Or I should say, Timken repackages NTN bearings made in Canada.
