I've been asking myslef this for the past quarter century or so.
Based upon my results, I'd say there's no difference in either engine life or fuel consumption, although I'd like to think that synthetics are the better oil.
Long drains?
We have a mod who went 10K on an old Nissan V-6 and had a great UOA using Walmart's pride conventional.
Bottom line is that Quaker State Ultimate Durability is (or was) a Dexos 1 licensed oil.
It is pretty cheap at around twenty bucks a jug from Walmart.
If you want to use synthetic, there you go.
I doubt that the avaerage Dexos 1 compliant syn blend is much, if any cheaper.

Don't forget: drink the coolaid.

I have had many vehicles exceed 1 while being 2 without a difference of 3 while driven by 4.

I don't think you'll see major differences between any dexos1 5w30 when it comes to fuel economy. If you have a Real Canadian Wholesale Club there (or its Atlantic equivalent), see if they're carrying Pennzoil dexos1 blend. They have it here, and it's priced quite reasonably.

Quaker State states that it's full synthetic now saves fuel. Posted thread below:
