I've been told that it's not good to keep switchin grade of oil ( and I don't mean synth to dino and vice versa ) but the grade. I heard if the car has been on 10w30 diet it's not good to switch it all over the place. I.E. 10W30 to 0W30 then to something else.. is it true ?? Is there any side affect or benefit of wear issues from doing this?

If this was true, my engine would have blown up 2 years ago!

I have mixed 10w30 with 10w40. I have mixed 5w30 with 20w50. I have mixed 10w40 with straight 40. No apparent problems.

You oil is constantly 'changing' grades from the temp changes it goes through, both internal, and ambient.
A little manual oil changing won't mean squat, either.

No, it's not true. Actually both the 10w30 and the 0w30 are just as thin when at normal operating temp (around 100 deg. C).

If such a warning were true (it isn't), it might be mentioned in (or for that matter, clash with) the owner's manuals for certain past VWs and Jaguars in which an incredible variety of oil weights were recommended, depending on temperatures and availability.

I heard the same thing from the person behind the parts counter some years ago when I was starting out with my first vehicle. The reply did little more than leave me more confused than before when I walked in the store. It just didn't make sense having known that oil appears thick when cold and thin when hot, and everyone seeming to change weights for the summer and winter seasons. I should of just seen the red flag, and considered asking another person. Now I have this forum and all those PDS's...how nice!

thanx.. thats what I thought.. but I'd thought I'd ask the guru's to make sure

For Ontario weather, stick to a 5w30 or 0w30 all year round.

Go to your esso distribution center and get their Esso XD3 Synthetic 0w30 and use it. It is good for summer and winter.
