Hi, guys, i got this box of pennzoil 100% synthetic oil from a friend of mine who used to own a garage. He gave me a box containing 6 liters, also, this oil could of been a little old because it was SL rated. So, i ended up using it on my last oil change. I had used a liter of this oil prior to the oil change to top off the oil so i only had 5 liters left. My van takes around 4.5 liters and the first thousand km after the oil change i had to add the rest of the half liter because of consumption. Now i need to add at least another half quart because it's showing a little low again. It's been 2500km since i changed the oil. I have some dino sitting around the house that i had bought earlier it's autolab brand 10w30 and SJ rated. Is it ok to use the dino to top of the oil? By the way, the pennzoil is 5w30 rated. A quart of this pennzoil oil is like around 9 bucks here and i don't really wanta pay that much just to top off the half liter. So, please advise me if it's ok to top off the oil with this dino i have at home. Also, forgot to mention this is in a 3.0L mitsubishi engine in 1996 caravan.

Yeah. It is perfectly ok though it is not a good idea. You dilute the quality of synthetic as well as messing with addictive package. But I used to use full synthetic on my Jeep Cherokee and add regular dino as the Cherokee leak the oil out. It always leak 1/2 quart every 500 miles and stop leaking. I just top off a little bit here and there to make sure it is always at a full mark. Call me crazy but I don't like to run cars low on oil.

Some here think you improve the quality of the dino using synthetic.

Some here think messing with the add-pack can offer an opportunity to improve the add-pack/base oil blend.

Just fine. As a matter of fact. Here is a VOA of SL Pennzoil. The first is yellow bottle. The second is handle bottle syn. I don't see an major problems with additve clash. IMHO with SL/SM oils is overated. Rember is it better to have differnt oils in your sump. Than to run your oil low.

Well, I won't call you crazy, but, you are perhaps attatched too much to what some dip-stick tells you, compared to what your engine may be telling you. If it drops to within the indicated levels on the stick, it's OK. Dipsticks aren't infallible, and perhaps you don't even have the stock dipstick in the vehicle. MANY cars leak/burn/consume oil if they are kept at FULL on the dipstick. Give it a test, it isn't going to hurt anything, especially if you keep it above the ADD mark.

That SL Synthetic is the Pennzoil Synthetic w/Pennzane right? I hear that stuff was pretty good

I'd use it with confidence. I see that on the shelves at K-Mart sometimes (the museum of old oil)

Thanks for the advice guys, i guess i have nothing to worry about. I'm only doing 5k oci so, it should all be good.
