If what he wanted was a discussion on shelf life, then perhaps these (and other) existing threads may be of assistance:
Hello, good people of BITOG forums.
I work at Advance Auto Parts. We are the superstore that acts as the hub for our district. I noticed that on oil shelves in the back, we have some old bottles of Valvoline All Fleet Plus 15w-40 that are dated as far back as 2004. What are the chances that this oil is still good assuming it is still sealed? Why it's been left there all that time, I don't know. I assume it got put back there and just then got forgotten about. If it's still good, I might pick it all up if I can talk to management and get him to let it go for next to nothing.

Hey guys!
I'm just wondering what the shelf life is on opened and unopened oil is these days? Probably stored in a garage that sees big temp swings. Would a steady controlled room temp make any difference? Thank you!

Sorry for the redundant thread but if buying oil and wanting to use it within say 6 months or so, how long should it really last? Id guess upon using it, I should give it a good shake or is that even really needed?
We're at the point where we need to buy oil when we see it, not when we need it... Sad.

I know that motor oil may become obsolete if stored for a long time, because of technological change. For instance, SE grade oil is not used on any new Western or Asian automobile engine models as far as I know, but if you have a stock 1978 Toyota Corolla, it will work fine.
But what if you have kept that oil container for 20 years in your garage? Is it still up to original specs, if it was never opened and much oxygen cannot get inside? What if you kept it stored under cold conditions?
Give me your take on this.

I have read on here that oil has a self life of several years if left in the bottle unopened. My question is how long will an oil generally stay fresh after the bottle has been opened if it is stored indoors at room temperature?
It is common for me to not use an entire bottle for my application so I have left overs.

Seems Chevron answers this question with their Euro 5W40 Havoline Ultra
Read down to the bottom in the gray box.
60 months from the bottle filling date- Interesting

This question has come up several times that I can recall. Mobil, I believe, has said that oil more than five years old should not be used. Some folks here believe otherwise, and that older oil is fine, and have used old oil.
Lake Speed, a well-known oil geek, has done some tests to see what happens to older oil. This video might just answer that question. If nothing else, perhaps it will generate some lively discussion.

Does anyone have any insights on the shelf life of QSUD? I see WalMart has it on sale for $14.67 for a 5 quart jug. I just purchased a car, and it's the first time I have had a car in 7-8 years. I'm not sure how much I'll be driving but I'm guessing about 5K miles a year. I live in a Philadelphia, so it will mainly be city driving. I'm planning on doing 5k OCI. I bought a few jugs of the QSUD when I saw the price and I was thinking of buying more, but it may end up sitting around for years. What's the risk of the oil sitting on the shelf for an extended period?
The car in question is a...

A couple months ago i bought 7QTS of Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 for my E60.
I did the oil change as usual and the car has been working fine BUT i noticed that the production date of these bottles are JANUARY 21, 2010!!![]()
I remember shaking the bottles and checking if there was any additives or residue at the bottom after using them, everything seemed to be fine.
Should i worry about it?

I just poured a quart of Valvoline 10W-40 into a car engine and when the bottle was almost empty I saw what looked like a slug go into the funnel and on into the engine. I stopped pouring and looked into the bottle and in the bottom the the bottle the oil looked like it had gelled. I have had this oil for an estimated 15-20 years out in my tractor shed. In the past I have seen 2 stroke oil gel in the bottom of the bottle after several years, but I did not know it would happen to motor oil. Anyone ever seen this?

Does engine oil have a "shelf life"? Does it degrade over time?
How about engine oil that's 2 years old (fully synthetic) from the date of manufacture? OK to use?
Thanks.

Today I went to the local lube distibutor where I get my Chevron Supreme and bought a case of 5W-30 Chevron Supreme and a case of Chevron Dextron III ATF fluid.
The Case of Chevron Supreme was over a year old with the bottles having a date of 1/2004. The ATF bottles said 7/2003.
I'm assuming its safe to use both of these?
I'm not that thrilled to be getting oil this old but I guess I will probably keep it.
What is the safe shelf life of oil and ATF? Thanks.

I know many of you buy cases of oil and stash them away, the question I have is how long can you store the oil before it goes bad?
I'm debating whether to stock up now as oil prices are rising.
Thanks

I'm not the brightest person in the world but help me understand shelf life with engine oil.
So if I took a vergin oil sample of say Mobil 1 and kept the rest of that quart for 20 years and then took another sample of it the readings would be way different? To the point that the oil would no longer be useable? What exactly goes bad with the oil? Does the additive package seperate from the base stock?
I'm just trying to understand this. Been reading on here a few posts about oil that someone has seen and is old stuff and then someone else posts that they wouldn't use it due to its age...

Interesting article in my Lube-tips newsletter this morning ....
The question was "Why is shelf life 1 or 2 yrs when oil will last in service much longer than that??"
Ashley Mayer from Noria answered:
"Oils do have a fairly short shelf life compared to the length of time they can last in service, if properly maintained.
The issue here is additive solvency as it is commonly referred to. Chemically speaking, "additive solvency" is a bit of a misnomer, as many additives are mixed or suspended, rather than dissolved in the base oil. When the lubricant is stored for an extended time, the...

I have a several gallons of Chevron dino and Valvoline synthetic oil left over from a diesel truck I sold in 2012. Should the oil still be good, or should I just bring the oil in for recycle? I have a friend with a 2010 Ram who could use it.

Does anyone know for sure what the shelf life is for engine oil? I'm debating purchasing 10 5qt jugs of Motorcraft Syn blend 5W-20 but don't want to do it if it will spoil on the shelf in my shop.
If you answer with some time limit please explan why or how you came up with that.
Thanks

I wonder how long a good synthetic motor oil (like Castrol 0W30 or Mobil 1) can be used after its manufacturing date ? I just bought a couple of German Castrol 0W30 quarts with the SL designation. I wonder how old this is. Does anyone know how to interpret the numbering codes on the bottles to figure out a Castrol or Mobil 1 manufacturing date ? Any input would be appreciated.
