is getting married a bad idea?

Maybe those single guys need to find a nice, conservative Christian woman with morals and values.

You do not get married unless you.
1. Are truly in love with each other.
2. Are willing to share everything, we have one savings and one checking.
3.You take the marriage vows seriously, this is not something you try.
4. You have already had disagreements/fights(I don't mean physical)
5.You can stand each others inlaws!

This dec we will celebrate 25 years.

A selfish lot we have here - I love you but you can't have anything of mine. We didn't want to get married, but did from pressure from our parents and because a married man on a single income got a lower tax rate. For several years we kept everything separate - she paid for the washing machine, it's hers, I paid for the blender, it's mine etc. However after 31 years and 4 children it doesn't matter anymore.

You have to make the right choice - it's that simple stupid.

Do it!! There is no reason you can't be as miserable as the rest of us. This is from someone who has been married for 24 years and looking forward to the next 24.

We don't want this to go R, but something along these lines is important, be it "conservative Christian" or reverence to more traditional values by any other non religious name. IMO most relationships default to hookups, S and an overly physical bias in he relationship too early, which prevents cultivation of other aspects of a proper, real relationship.

Then throw out a lot of the basic tenets of morality, family structure, etc because people reject or just know better, add in the immorality and brain deadness of way of life as portrayed on tv plus the waste of time that is TV itself, and you have society that is going down the tubes, kids and families right with it.

As for me I can spot a nutcase woman a mile away, I seek them out and then for some odd reason marry them.

I think the thing is to find a good one. You need to decide what is important and what is not. Don't think "well after we get married I will have a discussion with her and fix that".

Think also about kids. Either you both want them or you both don't. Kids are great. Expensive to raise but hopefully worth every penny. They will also pick out your nursing home.

^^This. TAKE YOUR TIME. If a chick tries to rush or push you into committment and won`t compromise,RUN,don`t walk away from that one.

^^The best advice here! Remember,if you marry the girl, you marry her family, friends, etc.

If you wait too long, you might forfeit a great girl

If you jump in too soon, you might forfeit at least half your stuff.

It's a tightrope.

Marriage can teach you many things in life...if you listen.

One good one is compromise, something most people simply cannot do...

I've been married nearly 11 years, through bliss and some serious cain, but we are still here together.

+1

If you can live happily without it and neither party feels they are "missing out" by not having it, there's really no need for it.

It will be 40 yrs next February. Not a smooth road, but we have each other's back. A marriage is constant compromise. The typical dumb kid stuff got us together. But we prevailed. Mostly because Marina has a high tolerance for my crazy ideas. Our interests have taken us away from each other, but the changes have been tolerated, because, though we are no longer smitten with other, we make a pretty good team. Our first grand child is due in 3 weeks . My folks and her folks are old school. Death pacts. All of my sibs are on their first spouse too. Better the devil you know..

20 years here in June just gone...unmarried as yet, which will change in Las Vegas in 2014.

IMO, a prenup is displaying that you don't have trust, and aren't willing to share...and therefore shouldn't be going there in the first place.

Finding the right person is tricky. Once you find them, stick by their side.

Honesty and compromise are the two biggest things in a relationship. Being honest enough to admit mistakes, and compromising about activities/finances/arguments/etc.

Being able to say sorry, mean it, and accept forgiveness/be forgiven is important. There will be fights, there will be disagreements, and they can get ugly. Being able to deliver and/or accept a sincere apology is important.

^^^Bravo. Someone who understands that COMPROMISE is the key.

Those who need to be right are poor choices for a marriage partner. You must be able to simply shut up when required and learn constructive ways to hash out the differences.

many of Sciphi's stated requirements are beyond a lot of folks, thus a lot of failed unions.

Too bad, as a good partner makes life much more enjoyable. I pity the poor folks too scared to try.

Next time you're out keep an eye out and see how many women have a ring on their finger. I've noticed this for a while but i'd say atleast 90 percent of them do. Makes me wonder how many of that 90 percent are actually happy.
