Is $2195 a decent price for a '20 John Deere S240?

There's a local John Deere dealer with a used 2020 S240 (42") for around $2,195. It has approx 95 hours logged on it. Nice shape overall, with large JD bagger assembly (which I actually don't need). Runs/cranks fine, original battery & tires. A small tear on seat cushion, but price will include new cover. Is this a deal on this thing, or should I just get a new one? I don't know much about JD's, other than this one has the Kawasaki engine & better hydrostatic trans. Told dealer I'd sleep on it, and have a 48 hr. hold in place. Thanks.

How much does he sell a new one for? JD tend to hold their value better than most but mowers drop fast like cars plus you get a warranty. 98 hrs for me would be around 2 years of use.

New ones are around $3500 plus tax. Haven't ruled out new, but will be moving from this location in a couple years and may not need a mower. Currently 1-1/2 acres.

I didnt see the hours. Thats way too much $$ for those hr
42 inch deck too small for 1.5 acres. get at least a 48"
I have some wooded areas that don't work well with too wide a deck. My Husqvarna was 54" and had problems in the yard, especilly the front ditches & between some of the trees. Maybe a 48" would be ok, but the 42" might be better in those areas.

So with tax you will be saving about $1,500.00 over new. Not a exactly a bargain but not really much overpriced. I assume you would get some kind of warranty buying from a dealer over a private sale. My main concern is the 42" deck. You will be spending extra time out there cutting. In the meantime look on line and see what used pricing is. You might find a real deal.

I agree nice mower but 42 is too small for 1.5 acres unless you really like mowing a long time. If you have wide open space without to many obstacles I would personally go 60 maybe even 72. obstacles like trees and gates for fences can change this

AFIK the John Deere 42-inch decks have only two anti-scalp wheels vs. four on the 48-inch decks. That may be an issue for your application.

I passed on the used 2020 S240, because the asking price of $2195 was around the cost of the mower when new. IMHO, that mower should be in the $1200-$1300 price range used. So, I would have been buying a 5 year old mower that would soon need battery, tires, blades etc. We're leaning towards a new one at this point. House needs shingles, 33 year old pickup needs replacing, so I can't go crazy with a mower with too many bells and whistles. A new S240 42" will be fine, as I've had 2 wheel decks before with no issues.

If a warranty is offered with the used JD. I think that is a pretty good deal. 95 Hours isn't much and $2100 doesn't buy you much in the way of new rider. A new S240 will cost you significantly more. I think you are over estimating what it would need. Oil change and maybe a new battery is all I see. Tires won't be bad in 5 years and you can sharpen the blades if needed. I would work a deal with your JD dealer to include an oil / filter change and a sharpening of the blades.

Was told it had no warranty. I was tempted to buy it, but have spent a lot of repair time & money on my 15 year old defunct Husky in the last few years. So, I need a break with mower repair for awhile, as cutting is enough of a chore. Anyway, we've got the new S240 on the way.
