Possibly. If you're consuming a ton of oil, oxidation, insolubles, and nitration would likely be elevated. But if you were consuming as much oil as you say you were with 10w-30 and your plugs are oily, you already know what's going on - either worn out rings or leaky valve seals.

Might want to consider a high mileage oil in that case.

I`d keep on going with the VR1 20W50 if I were you.

Stick with the 40 or 50 wt. oil in that old Bimmer. The later engines with VANOS and hydraulic lifters would be a more appropriate place for 0w/30 oils.

ah,ok. I was planning to rebuild the motor (eventually) anyway. What are some good High mileage oils? Would an Arx (abbreviation for Auto-RX?) treatment help me much?

I think high mileage oils are a gimmick. Just keep on doing what you`re doing.
