Interesting 2025 Mercedes CLA advertisement I saw the other day

Soon it will be,,, show the love! Then they'll be a roof rack with a cargo box on top showing a camping scene!
And then another one will be having the dogs in the front seat with the kids!

Subaru Jammed that nail right into the consumer's hearts.
That's good marketing! Try to find everybody's last nickel marketing them into buying an overpriced, high maintenance cost vehicle.

Is it smart? I mean, it’s cheapening the brand when a new Mercedes costs what a new Civic does.

Does buying a new, loaded Civic show that you have "made it"?

In 1932, Packard tried the same the same thing - expanding their potential client base through a cheaper model - and they introduced the "light eight" - a de-contented version of the standard eight.

They lost cachet, their position in the market, as a result of that cheapening, as well as money on the model.

Didn't work out that well in the long run.

Just because dealerships in the USA give away overpriced lattes and high markups on parts doesn’t mean that this is the brand. It’s a made up facet for the American public.

You could forever go get cloth seats and hubcaps in an E class sedan. A and B class cars have been around over in Europe, including most importantly, Germany, for a very long time.

They sell to the taxi segment. Heck, they sell tractor trailers and busses.

The exclusivity is made up as a sales gimmick. What they sold was quality engineering.

That’s why they could sell plenty of 67 hp sedans with manual transmissions, hubcaps, and no frills, with people more than willing to pay a premium for superior engineering. Sure, they had bigger, better cars back then too, but they weren’t that much fancier in fact.

The cheapening of the brand came from the top down. Post w140/124/201, cost was taken out. Reliability and engineering of alternatives/competitors was increasing. So all they could lean on was fake fanciness.

This ad is fake fanciness. No different than a Lexus or Acura. All might be nice cars. Folks might have reason to want to buy one over another option. But the pompousness of brand positioning is just a profit center, not justified. They sell these cheaper cars the world over. Pompousness and profit margins are the driver to not sell them here. Looks like there’s no choice but to pull all the stops now. Too bad the cost of doing business isn’t going to be commensurate.

That’s when it really gets cheapened. When the leases and proud folks can’t afford the cost of the latte machine at the dealer, and the cars go to ruin.

Yuck.

Is it possible the generation that's about to hit midlife crisis age doesn't have money for their bread and butter S class? So to stay relevant they bet on their name to carry into a cheaper model car.

What’s the profit margin on these entry level CLA Benz ?

Nah, Subaru: “if you don’t buy Subaru, your family will die in horrible death and you will live to witness it.”

I have a buddy who rocks 3 Wrangler Rubicon’s - he has threatened to roll them off the cliff to open the trail back up 😵‍💫

It's my understanding that the engine in the CLA is made by a Chinese company ... Geely?

If such is the case, why by a Mercedes?

I have zero clue. Google said somewhere around 6% but I have no way to quantifying that against any other number or factor.

That's what I hear a lot from europeans too; BMW and Merc is just a normal car brand that sells lots of vehicles without the luxo marque. Here they want people to buy the brand's name and not the product.

If something happened to my C43 I would give a CLA45 a hard look; the AWD system is really good and Race Start is a hoot. My only concern is that the four cylinder is cranked up to 11- 208 hp per liter. That said, I like the C43 about as much as any car I've owned save the E24 M6.

Why are you so much against blue collar workers? Subaru’s are main source of income for mom and pop’s mountain off road towing companies. Let them be! 😂

Yes. They are normal brands sort of. You still get innovative technology, longitudinal set ups (mostly) etc. So they are still pricier. But they do have variety of equipment that goes from cloth seats to uber luxury models.

I didn’t know you were that old.😁
