No, he didn't mean the hotels literally have fleas.
No, he didn't mean the hotels were actually at dump sites.
No, $200 was not meant to be used for every possible destination and situation (although it could be true depending on the location)

What areas do you find this issue . I have been visiting different colleges around New England/NY and a little in Fl and amazed at differences in prices. A cheap recent one was Syracuse NY , $135/night for decent place floored me as I pay $100-$150 more per night typically.

you are saying he was stating the hotel equivalent of "I cant buy a car for under $100000" And I'm saying I literally have never paid that much except on extreme occasions such as concert availability etc. So he must be doing something wrong, but without any background info and just some whining there is nothing we can do except agree or disagree... and I'm disagreeing.
I can certainly find a red roof inn or super 8 under $200 just about anywhere. Niagara falls either side, Cleveland, Gettysburg, cincinnati, pittsburgh columbus even pigeon forge. But I do see your point this is going nowhere.

Most hotel companies give employee discounts based upon availability. Lots of rooms = big discount. Not many rooms left and no real employee discount.
My family can get the same discount I do. And I can get friends a discount but not as good as employee.
It's funny how people are very capitalist until some thing they want to purchase becomes expensive due to supply and demand 
I suspect the percentage of same individuals who charge less than 100% of whatever they can get for whatever service they provide is somewhere around 0%
Am a Marriott guy myself (travel for work and they let us collect points) so get plenty of free nights through that plan. Generally though it's like anything else you look for the best deal you can find within whatever criteria you have.

I would have hated the system you're suggesting of the discount being based on availability as it takes away the ability to plan last minute trips.
It also doesn't sound fair to be honest.
The hotel business is a profitable business - pay is low - employees put up with abuse - difficult to schedule time off
Starwood setting a single price for the property, based on it's value and keeping it the same all year was fair.
(either $44, $55, $66, $77 or $88)
I'm sure private owners hated it but duh.

Where I live in the Phila suburbs, a Fairfield Inn (I like them even on business travel) is $256 next weekend. This is imho an entry level ok line of hotels. I've always attributed such prices to lack of supply. My bro who is wealthy wouldn't even pay that for my son's first communion. He got an air bnb in a sketchy location nearby in W Phila. It was actually nice inside for $85/night, but for me, I can't even imagine how many hidden cams there were. I'd take my chances on a hotel myself.
As far as bugs etc., my wife's cousin's family all got bit by bed bugs on a recent trip to AC. It's so sad to see a 5 and 7 yo with bites. We stayed at Bally's which was pretty disgusting.
Lastly contrast this to NoVA--where real estate is much more, but hotels much cheaper....the hotel business is a market, and hotels are so abundant in VA....MD seems a bit pricier, where we'd prefer to stay since we live in PA...

Nobody is experiencing the “flee (sic) infested dump” for $200. Nobody is agreeing with “insane”.
Prices are up - but your hyperbole/rant stands alone. Most of us are still traveling, and we know what is being charged. Most of the posts here are offering various explanations, but nobody else is in the “I am staying home” camp with you.
I book early and often and get good or great rates. Just stayed at Harrah's in Atlantic City for 2 nights for around $190 (total for 2 nights, including fees and parking). The Coastal Tower room was nice too. I'm going to Borgata in December (Christmas week) and it will cost a little more, but not much. I'm on every Atlantic City casino's mailing list and normally book rooms in advance, and when I get an email with a sale I rebook, las time for $38 less than my original booking. Right now a lot of Black Friday sales are going on (MGM, Ocean Casino, and I think maybe Caesars as well).
Also, I typically look at the rates, then decide when I'm going to go. I think people who pick their days then decide on the hotel are probably going to pay a lot more.

Numbers and specifics aside, there is no question room rates are ridiculous...
Maybe the Twin Cities is an outlier, but room rates 5 minutes from MSP airport and MOA are as follows when looking for one-night stay this evening (11/17):
2* - $55
3* - $75
4* - $91
There's TONS of rooms in Vegas right now for the F1 weekend for $70 a night. People originally predicted that F1 would cause room rates to TRIPLE. That didn't happen.

This is a a typical post by the OP. A rant on whatever irked him in the moment, and then arguing with anyone (usually nearly everyone else) that they are wrong.
As others have posted, the OP doesn't like the going rate where ever and whenever he's looking (which he of course won't share any details). Seasoned travelers know that the rates he's seeing aren't "insane" or ridiculous and that there are plenty of non flea ridden, dump site hotels available less than his arbitrary pain point. Perhaps not for his date and location, but in generalities - they are common out there. I know - stayed at many Marriot, Hilton, and IHG family properties over the last year at less than his "pain" point.
Definitely there is a certain "troll vs. troll" element going on in some of the posts!
