I have so many friends that always tell me they need a new car because it will be needing brakes and tires soon etc. Most can’t even afford the car they have. So instead of spending a grand or so they just go out and trade the car in or lease another car. I tell them with proper main you should easily get 200,000 miles out of most cars made today. It’s alway cheaper to repair a car in my opinion.

Many people like that are worried that repairs will rack up into the thousands of dollars. They fall out of love with that vehicle and want something new that won't have repairs for X number of years.

They don't realize that 2k worth of payments is only a few months of car payments and not years worth of car payments.

New cars generally are a want not a need. That being said on BITOG you will have many joining hands with you on this thread singing Kumbaya. I mean this is the place where "old cars come to die" and the pinnacle of automotive excellence is buying a beater for $5,000.00 and driving it to 300,000 miles and beyond.

Let the singing begin......

I've bought five new vehicles in my lifetime. Each time, there has been a corresponding significant life event that motivated the purchase - got a new job, had a child, etc.

Nothing wrong with getting a new car as long as you understand the financial implications and make decisions accordingly.

Hey... we need all sorts of people to buy new cars.... regardless if they are informed or not, or if they can afford it or not.

One of the best, most reliable vehicles that I've owned was a bank repo, that came from the auction. Things would get ugly quickly, if people stopped buying new cars. We just got a real good taste of it.

I agree

I buy them for tax reasons and honestly I'm getting tired of getting under cars.
I have bought way too many and planning on just owning one new one soon.
For years that was my only vice and I worked 24/7 but I no longer care for the hassle of more than one car.
If you travel long distance you start to worry about a beater

My wife bought her 15' Audi A4 new. Having no mortgage, no debt, being in the 32% federal tax bracket makes me wonder why I bought a used dented Elantra.
We are looking at a new Corolla SE to replace the Elantra.

Car Guy, looking at your stable of "fun type" cars, it seems just a bit hypocritical to judge others for their choices. Yes, I get your point that maintaining cars is much more responsible than replacing them often. But, many people have the financial means to buy vehicles as they choose, when they choose. Look at all the people here that buy mediocre MPG trucks that seldom use them as trucks. Their choice, not ours to judge.

Having said that, many Americans are entrenched in car culture and there is an attitude of entitlement to throw good sense out the window, me included. Just commenting, not busting your chops!.

I need a new car because my Alltrack is coming up on 3k miles now and Lexus is going to offer a IS500 V8...

Just kidding, the alltrack stays, best winter car ever. Even if i buy a toy i want to keep it around.

Just getting too old to knock out wheel bearings and struts on the weekend

Interest? never had interest. Work harder and pay attention to your credit rating.

Dealer needs to stay open and car salesman has bills to pay too.

A little more maintenance goes a long way. But, that is beyond typical USA marketing with deposable mentality.

The vehicles in the driveway don't match the neighborhood or the household income. Oh well. Don't care for the latest bloated gee-whiz junk.

And, the same people bouncing from car to car complain the most about their finances and want more socialism.

economically buying a good new car in your price range + keeping it until the wheels fall of is generally the most cost efficient especially if your a good DIYer, BUT if $$$$ is not an issue buy whatever + support the economy as seen by all the 4WD 4Dr tanks running around these days or like some live in a shack + have a caddy parked outside like the old days!! life is full of choices making the right ones allows us to live better!! in the end as usual its ALL about the $$$$$$

Car guy, I think you have to go back in time to where those habits of buying new cars began. I know for myself I had no father around when it was time to buy cars at time when it was the man's responsibility to maintain vehicles. So I bought poorly maintained vehicles needing a lot of repair without the knowledge base to do the repairs. I have my first new car and it gives a sense of freedom to not have to deal with the bigger maintenance issues.

I used to buy nothing but used, including rentals, and i'd drive the wheels off. Now with 20wt oils i only buy new, so i can drive the wheels off. I just don't want a used car thats been run on the cafe oils.

That's strange, bought a used Taurus that used 5w20 oil and ran that for over 200k. Not sure what you're saying. Current Mercedes uses 0w40 and that was also used. So no idea what you're talking about.

What i'm talking about is, i don't want a used car that ran on 20wt oil. I buy new, dump the oil when i get home and go 30wt up. I personally don't want a car with 20-30k or more of running time on a 20wt.

When cars were spec'd and run on 30, i bought them used. Now they they spec 20wt and usually are run on 20wt, i don't want them. I prefer to buy new, and get the 20wt out early.

I have 0w-40 in my mazda now.
