I have yet to post my previous new-to-me car purchase, but in the meantime, here’s the 2008 Toyota SLE V6 convertible I just bought for my son as his first car. It has its share of bumps and bruises (mostly caused by deer), but it’s a Toyota with 140K, a working top that doesn’t leak, and cold a/c. I’ve already purchased a color-matched trunk lid at a local salvage yard. I’ll likely buy a front bumper cover as well. I’m in the process of figuring out which items need attention. It definitely could use new front struts. It has new headlight assemblies, tires, wheels, and brakes.

He’s happy with the car, but I know part of him really wanted the 2010 Mustang V6 convertible I checked out at a local bankruptcy auction. It had cold a/c and only 89K, but the car being a total loss with some runs in the paint, dry rotted tires, and almost no use since at least early 2024 meant I wasn’t going to be the guy who bid $5,500 (or higher) plus fees. At two grand less, I maybe would consider it, but I got the Toyota instead. I imagine insurance premiums for a teenage boy with a Mustang are pretty cringeworthy as well.

I like the car you bought for your son, are you planning on using Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W-30?
Since I need to use up some Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30 I had for the Corolla, the first oil change (141K) will be that plus a quart of HPL Engine Cleaner 30. The second (through at least 5th) oil change will be Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w-30. I’m satisfied with how the Valvoline Restore and Protect has been working in my 2013 Ram Hemi.

How old is your son? Any driving experience? If not maybe leave as is as he may bump some things or he may get bumped in school lots etc.

Check out StreetSurvival.org for hands on defensive driving classes. Search on me with that for links to pictures/videos.
He turns 15 in July. I know a lot of Gen Z kids don’t care about cars, but he’s definitely not one of those kids. I’m definitely not paying for professional bodywork for a teen’s car. I remember high school kid behavior… and no way he will get to take the ‘63 Cadillac to school. I’ll have to check out the defensive driving information. I’ll be doing research on driver’s ed soon.

I would have paid an extra thousand to remove the Baylor and Texas Tech emblems off the trunk!
As a huge Longhorn fan and very proud graduate of UT-Austin (for undergraduate), my wife 100% agrees. My son wants to keep the Tech emblem because his friend will be going there. My wife says his college fund cannot be used if he goes to OU or A&M.

For some reason, at least down here, the material that those tops are made of seem to be susceptible to mold and sun damage. This especially applies to the tan colored ones. I don't see Texas being that much different.
I'd try to keep some sort of cover on it, or under a carport if possible.

Very nice choice for your son. I think it will serve him very well.

I went to Texas A&M, but other than that, I agree with you. My sister went to Texas, as did some of my cousins. One cousin went to A&M. Wife and daughter, UConn....

I always liked the Solara. Toyota made a mistake when they discontinued it. Honda made the same mistake discontinuing the Accord Coupe.

Heck yeah!

I got an 09 Camry sedan for my youngest to drive and even I, myself, an experienced driver with 30+ years had issues backing the thing. Consider (ugh) an aftermarket camera if it doesn't already have one.

Yeah, it's "cheating" in a way and not going to teach him "old school" but most subsequent cars will have them too, and the sight lines on that thing with the top up don't inspire me.

maybe run some injector cleaner like redline si1 or bg44k in a tank first and then oil change
