“I need a new car because” blah blah blah thread

I used to buy nothing but used, including rentals, and i'd drive the wheels off. Now with 20wt oils i only buy new, so i can drive the wheels off. I just don't want a used car thats been run on the cafe oils.
It’s time for you to quit the internet for today 😂

It makes sense in some cases to buy new especially if you do keep it long term. Some cars a year or 2 old with a higher interest rate, may not be a better deal. True with trucks right now. Look at the price of a 2 year old truck and compare that with new.

I will never buy a new car again, but I also need to get better at learning when it's time to get rid of an old ride. It's far too easy to say "I've already spent so much time and $$ into maintaining this, it's only a couple hundred $$ for this new repair then she should be good." I'm starting to not enjoy having to spend my weekends wrenching on last minute problems that pop up.

What i'm talking about is, i don't want a used car that ran on 20wt oil. I buy new, dump the oil when i get home and go 30wt up. I personally don't want a car with 20-30k or more of running time on a 20wt.

When cars were spec'd and run on 30, i bought them used. Now they they spec 20wt and usually are run on 20wt, i don't want them. I prefer to buy new, and get the 20wt out early.

I have 0w-40 in my mazda now.
This is great-I don't want to buy used because of the previous owner following the manufacturers recommendations......This makes as much sense as a 500 quart beyond your lifetime oil stash.

It just keeps getting better on here!

Its a forum for discussion. I don't have a 500 quart stash ? Currently i have 1 jug of 0w40, 2 jugs of 15w40 , and a bottle of amsoil hdd.

Again your tone here at times sounds like you don't like the site.

i love old cars and i don‘t mind maintaining them either. but to me, i’ll always drive a relatively new car as my daily, primarily because of the safety features. Stability control, antilock, crumple zones, side impact air bags, backup cameras, etc.

that said, you can usually find a lightly used car with most of the modern safety features for a decent chunk less than a new car, so going used makes sense for a lot of people. i buy new mostly because i don’t like not knowing how the previous owner(s) treated whatever used car i would have bought instead.

As soon as the masses learn and embrace "the rules" that drives prices up and "the rules" are a fool's bet.

3-year old CPOs with 50k+ miles going for the same price as a carefully negotiated new car with rebates are an example of this.

I legitimately don't know how to evaluate a 3 year old car. Yeah, it looks perfect, it should be perfect, but there's a reason someone got out of it. Show me a worn out beater with obvious problems and I'll bite.

I have so many friends that always tell me they need a new car because it will be needing brakes and tires soon etc. Most can’t even afford the car they have. So instead of spending a grand or so they just go out and trade the car in or lease another car. I tell them with proper main you should easily get 200,000 miles out of most cars made today. It’s alway cheaper to repair a car in my opinion.

Do they return the favour and tell you how to spend your money?

I always find these threads about what other people are spending their money on interesting. While unsafe modifications like Brodozers and the Carolina Squat, "dubbs" and "stance" are, in my opinion, legitimate items to critique, not because of the financial angle but because they are a liability, it's surprising how often people complain about people they sometimes don't even know spending money that isn't theirs on something that because they wouldn't buy it personally, don't think this other party should either.

You buy Michelin tires you've got some guy telling you that you should be running Ling-Long MaybeTractionSometime specials for $5.99 because that's what he runs and more expensive tires are a "waste of money". You run Mobil 1 at the OLM? Just buy SuperTech from Walmart and change it at 3,000 miles (this one is just bizarre). You buy a new vehicle? No bro, you IDIOT, you SHOULD be driving a 1994 Corolla because Toyota's are the ultimate in reliability and nobody needs a new car, just drive it until the wheels fall off and you don't ever need to do brakes, shocks/struts, bushings or anything, they last forever, trust me, I drive one, it has 200,000 miles on the original shocks and they are as good as new!! :sneaky:

It's like the financial version of the left-lane police but with more bloviation and less impact on the lives of others.

I did that with a lot of saturns and some cieras.

Yea-I would agree that "a used car is a used car" for a reason. But if you talk to a sales person who has been at a dealership for any length of time (it's rare I know) you can hear many stories about people trading in GOOD USED low mileage cars for the smallest of reasons. Then you always have two or three year old lease returns. In the vast majority of lease cases-the one's who turn in a leased vehicle are very likely to lease another.

I think can people can buy and do what they please.

That being.said I know very few wealthy people who got there with new car loans in their financial picture. New cars kill wealth.

I wish I could afford any new car. New cars might be a waste of money, but it is nice knowing how your rig has been treated and maintained the whole life. Buying used, even after a good check through, there are still unknown factors.

I think if one does buy used, it helps to have two vehicles in the stable. That way, one can be worked on while the other is driven. I've saved a few thousand in the last 6 months by being more confident in repairing one rig myself and not be worried I will mess it up and not have anything to drive the next day. Can take my time with repairs.
