I love barter...Traded Honda for a Kia.

Oh yeah, she's definitely getting that recall lol 😉
I mean, it's free and it's a safety issue 🤷‍♂️
It would seem parts are still available

It's a 20+ year old compact, they didn't crash well brand new
Respectfully I'd like to see you live to swap it for something else 😳

In fact, I dare you to take it in just to confuse the people on the service drive
They're used to swapping engine/transmission and subframes on mostly 2010+ vehicles
This cars probably older than the young porter kid that's pulling it around
A good few of the techs probably have never seen one
Show them a vehicle that doesn't need an engine, they'll be baffled 🤯

As for the TB kit, I'd go with the Aisin TKK008 or the Continental PP302LK1, the latter includes cam & crank seals

Thanks for those part numbers! The engine is mostly dry somehow... Valve cover gasket was replaced a couple months ago, but everything else is still original and seals well. Low mileage, but I thought the age would make everything leak, yet it didn't.

Crash ratings on it aren't the greatest, but hopefully better than the scooter crash ratings... Slightly higher chances of survival.

And taking it in to dealer may actually happen just for giggles lol.

That seems like a very good trade. A basic car to get around with that's 10000x safer than anything with two wheels. I refuse to ever get on a motorcycle or scooter. People just drive too horribly and no matter how good of a rider you are, anyone in a car makes a mistake or zones out and boom, you're quadriplegic.

Plus, you get climate control :) A few people at work joke about my Bolt being a glorified golf cart. But I think if you want a golf cart that's fully enclosed with windshield wipers, air conditioning, and heating, you'd spend nearly as much and it coudln't go 92MPH!

How's the fuel economy? Upper 30s if driven gently?

Are your tires OK? I didn't read through the thread super carefully but on an older low mileage vehicle that sat for a while I'd check those date codes pronto!

I'm surprised by how quiet the engine is. I'm used to a millisecond rattle/chatter when engine is started from sitting overnight. Whether it's a timing chain driven Toyota or a timing belt driven Honda. Even the previously owned 2009 Hyundai Accent 1.6L (also with timing belt) had a little startup rattle until oil pressure is built up.
But this Sephia? None. No extra noises. Starts up so smooth and quiet, as if I just shut it off only a few mins ago. It's a small thing, but caught me by surprise. Very impressive. But then again - it's still under 65k miles. (Sat abandoned from 2017-2023 though.)

Now the Auto tranny? That's a different story lol... She likes to sing as if she's a Honda power steering pump lol. Shifts smooth though, and gets the power down nicely. I think it still makes all of its 125 horsepower, (or 16,400 duckpower. Official conversion is 1HP=131.2DP)

I'm pretty sure its the Mazda 1.8 that was in the 1991 Escort GT my family had when I was in high school, and I don't think its an interference engine? In a 2500lb car its fine. I wonder whose ATX it is?

Tires are brand new, 500 miles on them total as of this morning. MPG is unknown yet, but likely very good. I think it may beat my 31MPG Pontiac Vibe. And while stress testing it I see that it has no problem going triple digits on a closed course. All while AC keeps the interior dry and chilly. Color me happy. 😊

This one doesn't have an ATX, it's got the Mazda/Kia F4A-EL, also known as Ford F-4EAT.

If I could find mostly rust free 90's manual trans cars like this I probably would just buy those for DDing. Cheap and reliable, light and kinda fun to drive.

What's going on with the plastic bumper covers? Some strange patterns on there.
The sun cooked off the paint, and then layer by layer cooked off the oils inside the plastic bumper. The "ripple" patterns that you see are results of that.
Many used car dealers use this trick on unpainted faded plastics - take a heat gun or torch to it to freshen up the look. That heat brings up the oils from within, but over time bumpers and plastics turn into what you see here.

In other news - the more I drive it, the more I like it... This is dangerous...

You're happy and the guy who got the scoot is happy.
Win-Win, a happy outcome for both parties.
These little things seemed pretty solid when they were more common. Couple of people at work had one years ago for quite a few years as their DD commuter.
