I just came back after being banned for weeks

I would too.

I think bannning first, for weeks or a month+ at a time is pretty harsh.

But I'm not paying for this site, and I'm sure no owner. So keep your nose clean I guess.

As a super mod in another forum I completely understand. Both you and the mods have their reasons/justifications.

Obviously you didn't learn the BEST lesson... keep your head down and don't get noticed!

Don't pretend to not understand because the message mentioned YouTube-YouTube is becoming generic for on line video much like Kleenex is any tissue or Xerox is any copy.

It's clear to 99% of the posters here what is and is not acceptable; I'll never understand why the remaining 1% don't understand what is and is not acceptable and can't fathom why they were banned when they post unacceptable material.

I don't think it is as clean cut. Some people would assume they are in the 99% of the people but in fact they are in the 1% . I don't think 99% of the people would not understand why the remaining 1% doesn't, but rather 1% of the people would not understand why the remaining 99% thinks it is not acceptable to post certain borderline materials. Be careful what you wish for, we are all in the 1% once in a while in different occasion.

The thing is, popular video can have hundreds of comments if not thousands or more, and you can't expect people to read through all the comments, and sometimes the newer comments are shown first so it is out of your control what people post afterward that viewers sees.

If this is a problem, why not mandate or automatically ask people to post you tube or blog with embedded option that doesn't show comments and call it a day or remove the post? Why banning?

And it is not just explicit comment as well. I've once posted a comic about the 15 years ago vs now on what people do that is now all done on computer. One last one hinted something that may be naughty (PG compare to many of the jokes in the humor section) and it was removed and asked to censor the last block by the mod.

So what you do not see may have already been censored, the rule is not black and white and it really depends on the opinion of the enforcers.

The ban massage from BITOG read that I was banned for posting a link to Youtube with obscenities.

Again, the link I posted was not YOUTUBE.

If BITOG decides to ban for posting links to blogs, it is fine with me, but it HAS to disclosed in the BITOG rules.

In case I missed it, please show me the rule about banning for linking to blogs.

I'm perfectly fine with obeying forum rules when the rules are clearly stated.

Thank you!

Friendly:
You're a nice guy but I fear that if you persist on airing your questions about why you were banned in an open forum rather than in a PM to Helen or a mod... that you will go missing again for a longer time.
I may be wrong but you should think it over.
Better yet, PM a mod and ask them.

We'd love to, but cannot get a hold of him: Since being banned it's been rumoured that went (gasp!) *outside*.

This is exactly right and a large conundrum. While the forum software works with youtube and myspace brand embedded videos I don't think it does Vimeo, etc.

I do believe skipping youtube comments was a motivating factor for the software update, and I thank the mods for enabling embedding.

Nope, haven't been banned yet.....

Well, PG-13 might be a better choice than G for this forum, but I can live with it. It's better than some automotive forums, where very second word is a swear. At least it helps weed out some of those who cannot write in a coherent fashion.

Are you saying that the OP will get banned yet again for talking about his Ban in this thread? Lol!

It's so easy to get around a ban, temporary or permanent, i honestly don't even see the point. All it does is agitate the banned person and does absolutely no good.

A properly worded warning will go much further and help educate the person who did something wrong, don't you think?

All other forums that i'm on, you get a warning before you get the ban hammer. Only on here are you shown the door without any warning whatsoever! I think it's wrong and is the reason why i will not support this site financially.

I have not been active on BITOG for 6 months now. I just happen to log back in (to look something up) and happened to see this topic. I VOLUNTARILY left BITOG after my 2nd ban.

I agree 100% with the Artems previous post, all it would have took was a communication to clarify something, not a ban. Even so, I tried a personal explanation, and apparently it fell on deaf ears.

I also see repetitive disparity in the application of the censorship rules. In fact, I saw a notable member break the rules by posting a clearly sexually explicit joke that stayed up, while something else that was completely innocent was removed and that poster banned.

I also see a certain well known guy often writing in caps going POSTAL and BALLISTIC on others, but he throws his weight around and threatens to ban others for far less.

Bottom line; BITOG is a great site with a wealth of information, but for me personally, I choose to avoid the grief of it. The banning is just too over the top. I am an active member of many other forums, both automotive and otherwise, so, there is no shortage of places me to happily spend my time.

Best wishes to all, GFH.

I understand about keeping the site PG-13 but how is a forum about oil a "family" type place.

More like rated G.

I am not going to remove this thread or ban the OP for this thread. When there is profanity in the first or second line of comments on a video you will be banned. When a member has been warned and continues to violate the rules then we ban them. We do not like to ban members but in order to keep the site the way the original members set it up to be we have to follow rules. We can not read every post even though each one of us spend several hours reading post each day. If members see a post that violates board rules all you have to is click on notify and the problem will be dealt with. I recently found out that a member and his 10 year old son read BITOG together because the son wants to help with vehicle maintenance. Thank you to all the members that help keep the site a place where this young man can learn proper vehicle maintenance and when he is older he plans to become a member.

The mods and I are always available to discuss an issue with members. All you have to do is PM or e-mail any one of us.

Warnings dont happen. Communication with all but one or two of the people in charge is non existant. Try to ask why something was done, no one even cares to respond. They one person I can regularly get a hold of is not on much it seems anymore but at least he tries.

Frankly is refreshing to go to a forum that does not have profanity. Most forums I frequent are without profanity or corrected very quickly. I consider myself intelligent enough to express myself without using it.

My name is not Jimmy Hoffa!

No, thank you Helen. It's a rare automotive forum that isn't dedicated to making a vehicle look "sick" or whatever the latest, less palatable parlance is.

I try to stay of these bashing threads but I'm sorry but warnings DO happen. In this thread alone there is someone who has had MANY warnings from more than a few of the Mods so they do happen.

There is a lot happening on this board. A lot of posts and members. It takes a large amount of time for each and everyone of us. We try to note what is being done to a member when warnings and time off is issued so the if we have to deal with someone many times anyone will know what to do next.

Is it perfect? Of course not. But BITOG is known as a place where facts are in the majority and most members respect each other and the board.

I'm proud to be part of this board.

Perhaps sometimes they do happen, although I can not comment on that. I can tell you personally that they sometimes do not.
