I don’t need no stink’n truck!

I used to have a truck. 18 months ago I dropped it off at a shop for some work and never got it back.
I'll never have anything custom done on a vehicle again.

For the most part, I don't need a truck. I can get by with my small trailer and my Grand Marquis. I do "need" to tow my Jeep around for offroad trips.

I have hauled 8' sections of dimensional lumber and 10' sections of PVC in our Nissan Sentra.

Had two Tacomas. A 2002 and a 2015. The 15 got totaled out due to hail. Looked into a 4 Runner. Wasn’t impressed with the room. Wasn’t looking for another truck till I picked up a 24 Tundra. The Tundra get as much if not a little more mpgs than my 15 Tacoma and 24 4 Runner.

My hatchbacks over the years have carried as much as I want to load/unload in a day.

There is not a problem with that, is it? Why do so many resent truck owners "not using it like a truck" enough? We still have a choice to buy and drive without justifying it to others, correct? Does anyone really "need" a Corvette? Or a BMW?
“This is also an open discussion, my points are valid, so I get to add my 2 cents.“

I feel like I heard someone say this recently… can’t remember who though. 🤔

Sunglasses don’t pose a safety hazard to others. Statistics are clear from IIHS, bigger cars are safer than smaller cars. Pay to win kind of thing. Since the vast majority of Americans drive big vehicles, driving a small economy car puts you at a disadvantage.

And if you say “so you’re ok with speeding corvette drivers?!” I don’t approve of that just because I don’t like big cars everywhere. I’d feel a lot safer in a big truck for sure, but I don’t want to spend the big bucks to drive one. I don’t want to pay to win. Honestly, I wish public transportation was better so I could just take the bus. Bus wins most of those collisions.
I counted the word "I" seven times. It would seem to me you value your preferences, just like I and many others do. My question remains, why is someones preference in vehicle held to high scrutiny when someone prefers to own a truck? Truck owners are judged by others so readily, but other vehicles are generally not questioned. I never hear "do you really need to own a car capable of 170 mph? Why isnt that owner ever asked to justify his sports car? No one really "needs" to go 170mph, correct? But the "do you really need a truck?" question persists. Its tiresome.

Uh, not so fast…

Hyundai/Kia is always bashed - own one of those by the way.

Small displacement turbo GDI engines receive harsh criticisms regarding their reliability - drive one of those too by the way.

Hybrids are thought to have “too much technology” making them less desirable in general - got one of those as well by the way.

And don’t get folks going on any newer vehicle purchases… you could be investing that money, don’t you know?!?! Just wasting all your money on depreciation - oh yeah, 2 of 3 cars in my sig are less than 2 years old.

Also there have been several threads recently trashing Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep relentlessly.

And let’s not forget the Euro car owners - no one ever said anything negative about them, right?

Everyone gets a lickin’ from time to time around here.

Hauled 10 bags of dirt in my Fit when it was a year old and probably messed up the rear suspensions as the result. That was 12 years ago and I am still rocking OEM suspension with almost 200k miles. I don’t do that again unless it is people, which I hauled 5 and our camping gear for the Canadian trip earlier in summer. Honda Fit is awesome. I am keeping it as long as I can.

Those are brands, not vehicle types, like trucks or sports cars. Completely different topic.

In general, trucks are the only vehicle type people question "do you really NEED one."

Bro. I saw this car in Ontario in June when I visited. I surely thought it was Mike’s car from Breaking Bad or some mobile pharmacy wagon.
Where on Ontario? I frequently have friends thinking they saw me but there are actually a lot more of these cars around here than you would think lol.

Hybrid and TGDI isn’t a type? I think that is somewhat semantical.
You are using semantics and hair splitting to avoid and deflect away from the subject.

Truck owners are generally the only ones that are ever asked "do you really NEED it". If someone bought a Porsche or Corvette everyone would say COOL! Zero questions would be asked about "need".

Agree to disagree I guess.
He has a good point. Even though I own my truck sometimes I feel glad that my employers name is on the side so ignorant judgemental people don't look and think "that guy is an inferior human being, because he chooses to drive a truck". Maybe people won't judge as much because it's a 20 year old truck? I don't really know because I can't get inside the heads of these people.

Here are some pictures of the contents of my truck.....and all the stuff I have to remove every time i need to move large stuff or tow heavy with it. It's sitting right around max payload with everything in it except me.

In the summer anytime I just need to drive somewhere and don't need a truck I will take the 40 year old Oldsmobile. Because it's cheaper on gas and I'm saving miles on the work truck. Winter time unfortunately I only have the truck but the weather often gets bad enough I'm glad to have it anyway.

Let’s weep for truck owners. Poor tortured souls cannot catch a break in this harsh world.

Truck owners are generally the only ones that are ever asked "do you really NEED it".
Unlike high performance sports cars, modern American pickup trucks are intimidatingly big.
They're tall and block the view. They're long; crew cabs take the parking space of two cars in the city.
They're wide and make it difficult for other vehicles to pass by on narrow city streets, also crowding bicycles and pedestrians.
And while the high performance sports car can be driven as gently and cautiously as any other vehicle,
the gargantuan pickup is always ponderous, no matter the drivers intention.
