I don’t need no stink’n truck!

We have a hitch on the van and a carrier rated for 500lbs which comes in handy as well.

I will preface all this with I live in a rural area, if I was in a city I absolutely wouldn’t have a truck. But I’ll stick to my minivan and truck because a car can’t do either of these.. Though now with 4 kids it’s become too much of a PITA to move the seats in the van.

Also the sheer utility of the truck is wonderful… if I had a car I wouldn’t have been able to grab this power wheels I found sticking out of a garbage can.

We sold my truck when we moved to the suburbs. We used to have some land in the country. Def needed a truck back then. Don’t need it now. But I def don’t want a lot of land again either. I prefer to spend my time doing things other than tending to property. My whole Saturday used to be landscaping - ugh! I don’t miss that at all.

I like to poke fun a truck people but I have driven many. It is just some light hearted ribbing.

Certainly large / heavy objects can be forced into a car. Whatever. I have no problem what people do with their own vehicles.

For the sake of this discussion, is it optimal and practical to haul 8' lumber in a small car? Fill a minivan with cement blocks? No, for many reasons, no. One bump could send the lumber into the windshield, or tear a hole in the dash. A bunch of concrete in a minivan very likely exceeds weight capacity, and stresses the suspension. Its much easier to unload heavy objects out of the open bed of a truck instead of lifting heavy objects crammed into a small space with a low roof overhead.

Again, all to their own. I love having a truck on hand 24/7.
If I needed heavy duty stuff like that I’d def be borrowing or renting a truck. But for me that type of heavy duty activity is very rare. Most of my hauling is simple DIY home repairs or furniture moving.

I'm happy I live in a country where I can buy anything I want and don't need to justify it to others. There were/are countries where ownership of anything was considered a "need".
So true. That is why the subject line is ”I don’t need no stink’n truck!” And it is not “You don’t need no stink’n truck, comrade!”

I’m saving up. It’s about tool selection now. We have a truck and it’s by no means perfect … on top of a shady 10r80 it’s making some startup rattles now which could be chain guides (?), with a lifetime dose of heavier oils…. But we don’t want to trade it for another because the prices are ruthless; we’ll keep this one. I sold my DD sedan a year ago - am looking for a DD SUV. We use the truck too much to do without, but the newer longer commute calls for something a little smaller and nimbler. I’d stopped looking much, but I can’t let go of the idea of an X3 with Carmax warranty. The warranty even opens up diesel options, and the truck can soldier on with woodworking and dirty stuff.

I think for us, a 2wd and AWD wagon with simple roof racks and a trailer does everything we need. We drive enough that I don't want the pickup truck mileage and maintenance costs. We don't tow heavy stuff and don't really want too.
This little trailer has been very handy over the years and does a few things better than a pickup bed IMO with the same load capacity. I hauled this load of wood from a friends place behind my Focus with hardly any mileage penalty, then dropped the trailer for a couple days, then my son hooked it up pulled it across the yard to the firewood shelter, and unloaded it himself(he is working on the splitting). Its also a good working height for painting, work stand, and easy to load and unload. Its also just 50" wide so you can pull it in the woods on atv trails.

We needed more dry storage room for camping stuff, so I built a raised cover to slip totes in and then added the bike rack. In this configuration at 60-65mph the Outback gets around average pickup truck mileage.

Nice set ups! I think 4-wheelers and gators are great little work horses. Also I used to have a little trailer like that I pulled behind my riding mower. It worked well for light chores.

I need more land, 2 acres doesn’t go far when you want to start planting some crops!

The chickens handle our landscaping… and if it ain’t my chickens it’s whoever else’s chickens. They eat all the bugs though so I can’t complain🤷🏻‍♂️

We live on a farm so no way would we be without a truck. We have a 24 ft gooseneck stock trailer plus an 18" car hauler both of which need a decent size truck to haul. Going to rent a truck is a hassle and I don't borrow other people's vehicles or loan them mine so that is out of the question.
I also own a house in a subdivision that my daughter lives in and when the limbs come out of the trees or I have to trim the trees, having a truck comes in very handy. I like the convenience of having a truck so if I need to haul something that won't fit in our Mustangs or Cavaliers, I can just grab the truck and go.
I agree that not everyone needs a truck and are good with just owning some type of car, mini-van, or sport utility.

Yes, this is the big thing the "I hate trucks rent a trailer crowd" doesn't understand. Driving along in my truck, I see something I want, on the road, at a sale, at walmart, wherever, I get it, put it in my truck. Done.
We grabbed a pretty nice looking free office chair off the front lawn, Didn't even have to put down the rear seat of the Focus... Dishwasher in the box fits, standard washers and dryers fit too, but not in the box usually with the rear seats forward.
Pallets though, it seems the 40x48" ones are rare in my travels, which do fit, any bigger and they don't, unless I strap them on the roof rack, but its a bit awkward as I have to strap through the pallets...
My trailer unloaded has virtually no mileage penalty, but unloaded its a bit noisy/bouncy back there for every day... When I need some pallets I just tow it work for a day or two until I find what I need.

I am interested in something like the Ford Maverick hybrid, with a semi aero cap... A nice planetary cvt, which is what many 400hp field tractors use, so it could be beefed up a fraction to tow 3500lb, and still get 35-40mpg, and have a set of good tires cost less than $1k...

You guys have convinced me, I’m going to buy a truck now so that I can pick up trash off the side of the road and take it home. Who care about spending twice as much on fuel every week when you can potentially haul off the random rubbish you find along your journeys.

Yes!! I scored a BUNCH of 10 foot bamboo a couple of years ago which someone had cut down. I took home the stalks and trimmed them smooth, and then sewed outdoor sail cloth fabric around them and made sun shades for our deck. That’s the spirit!!

New 1/2 ton truck - $50,000
Weekly fuel for new truck - $100
Being able to snag up $50 worth of stuff someone else left on the side of the road to take back to your epic hoard - priceless
lol I had this same thought after reading a few other posts in this thread.

I have a truck. I like it. Admittedly, in this day and age, I don't need it:

What I need I get delivered. Delivery is cheaply available for almost anything nowadays.
If I want stuff hauled away, I list it for cheap on Marketplace and somebody takes it for me.

In the end, there is no "do it all" vehicle. I think for most common folk, the minivan comes closest. Some need trucks. But most simply want trucks.

Even if there was a “perfect” vehicle that would satisfy the needs of all, it is not a desirable outcome. Societies thrive the most when they allow free choices and bearing the consequences of said choices.
