I caught two boys stealing mail

I cannot agree with the great writer on this. Based on experience, some people are born with hyper empathy and conscientiousness. I know, because I was born like that. I cannot really prove that, but there is suggestive evidence of a sort. My biological father is a musician. We were all still living together up until when I was 5 or so. According to my parents, when they started to ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I started to insistently tell them that I wanted to be a doctor to everyone, everywhere, and that I would always be there for anyone who needed someone.

My dad has spiritual beliefs, and we would have these deep conversations at the time, and I would tell him things about how it was so important to care for everyone and how so many people hurt. He was deeply moved by these conversations and wrote a song about it called Dr. Everywhere.

I remember at the time, I could feel people's feelings and emotions at the time, and most of what I felt was suffering, and it deeply pained me. It was quite an uncomfortable experience (was always a very sad and deeply serious child). Anyways, I didn't want to be a literal doctor, but it was the closest thing in my 4 year old mind and vocab to the concept of unconditional and universal help and love for others. Basically, at that time, I cared about everyone and every living creature. Hyper affective empathy. When you deeply care about and feel for others, it really, really lessens your desire and very ability to do wrong to others. This hyper empathy didn't last past age 7 due to a rough and stressful childhood (I ended up shutting down, and becoming extremely withdrawn, to the point of moderate autistic like behavior-extremely quiet/non verbal, etc).

Anyways, this is a friend and I performing my dad's song many years after it was written:

Please do not quote the yt video link, I'm hoping it can be edited out later. Thank you.

Justin, I appreciate you putting "it all out there". That took courage. Impressive.

Thank you Scott.

Could you edit your post to remove the YT link? Thank you. (I just don't want it up for all time, since it contains personally identifying information).

Hi moderator folks,

I knew that the edit function eventually leaves, but wasn't sure how quickly. It's left on a previous post. Any chance that one of you could go to my post, 71, and remove the YT link?

Thank you for considering

Hopefully the parents are like old school ones...
I wouldn't be surprised if the parents are in on it to avoid getting the postal inspector treatment, but I hope they will be under scrutiny now.

An old dummy in this area was stealing mail but he was bleaching any checks he found to put his name on.

Check washing still is a thing

You have to be stupid to be a criminal, you always get caught.

Thats why most all fraud is by people not even in the country including by foreign governments.

We know who all the actors are, I’m not sure why we don’t just take out the 2 dozen buildings 99% of the fraud comes from.

A kid on my sons afternoon bus punched his school issued Chromebook (can we go back to textbooks please) and shattered the screen, then tried saying my son told him to do it and they were “just playing”. The other parents were immediately trying to pass the blame back to us… until they got shown the video evidence and had to pay to replace the screen! Our kids no longer ride the afternoon bus, because they’re one of the last ones picked up and dropped off.
Going back to textbooks is going backwards. If kids are not totally fluent in computer use, we cede the future to China. Plus, textbooks are expensive and are quickly outdated.

If the parents have no ethics or morality, their kids won't either. With a divorce rate over 50%, church membership at an all-time low and falling, combined with peer pressure and a "no punishment" policy because it will hurt their self-esteem, we're seeing the end result. Kids with no empathy, only emotions are hatred or anger and total indifference to consequences.

The baseball bat thing on the mailboxes happened several year ago. The two boys are probably in prison by now. 🫤

I installed Ring cameras awhile back because mountain lions had been seen in the immediate area, including two of them walking up my neighbor's driveway just two houses down. There are a lot off deer in the area, which I assume attracts them. Sue and I have been disappointed that we haven't seen any wildlife, not even a raccoon or skunk. Oh well, just as well.

Now that we have the cameras I can't imagine being without them.

After they raised the prices I've been on the fence on firing them.

The one camera doesn't work all winter since it's designed not charge if it's cold 🤣
The other is hard wired (doorbell). Works ok, but the lag is horrendous. The chime inside will alert someone is at the door like 30-+ seconds after the button has been pushed.

I realize this does not directly address the OP's subject but since OP and others mentioned cameras, I suppose it is ok to veer off the "mail boxes" theft? I am happy to hear thieves were at least caught and turned in to authorities. It is a shame they likely will get off easy.

What cameras do most of you guys use around the outside of the house? I been trying to decide what to do. Buy my own or go with the security cameras our alarm folks offer (of course with monthly charges).

They my be looking to steal hand written checks for a fraud called "check washing." They may have been selling checks to someone who does it.
Washing checks" refers to a type of check fraud where criminals steal checks, use chemicals to remove or alter the original ink on the check, and then rewrite the check with a new payee and amount. This allows them to deposit the altered check and steal the funds.

@VersysVsWhat, thank you for your view on this. To a very large extent I agree with you, but also there are gaps that I presume you left out on purpose - stuff that might cause moderator action. I suspect those "gaps" are something that we would agree on as well.

I will add one comment. Social media and the internet are rotting people's brains. "Influencers" are toxic to society, yet some make millions doing it. FWIW, I do not consider BITOG social media. BITOG is a library of information that has off topic discussions like this.

Once again, thanks for your thoughtful missive.

Yeah we had theftins my Suburbia neighborhood. It was happening quite too often. So they started tracing the delivery mailman and caught the porch Pirates. They were cruising behind mail trucks with beach cruiser bikes and baskets looking very innocent.

Also in my neighborhood route we had a mailman that was getting tired at the end of his shift and he would just toss the mail into the can. Enough people called including myself, we put tracers on various things. They caught him.

But those kids were probably fishing for credit cards and identity fraud that they can sell to somebody that's sitting in some back room paying for them.

Pretty much the same here. Rural here though and the only decent in the mail are some small packages, locking box = required.

Also dudes in cars, late at night cruising and opening unlocked boxes

When we lived in Steilacoom, WA the USPS delivered mail to lock boxes. The boxes would be broken into, thus destroying the boxes.

It would takes USPS months to repair/ replace the destroyed locked boxes. People had no other choice than to go to the post office for months to get their mail. Huge inconvenience and cost of time to the residents of Steilacoom.

Here is an article on the subject. The comments from the residents all point to removing mail before dark, or having mail delivered to a USPS PO Box. Not one of the numerous comments suggest arresting, trial, conviction, and placing the criminals in jail. No wonder senior citizen women get robbed and carjacked regularly in the Target parking lot on a Tuesday afternoon. Sad people in Washington state have chosen to accept items that legally belong to them are ok to be taken by people who the items don't belong.

We have our own stout box so not dependent on USPS. No one has fiddled with it. I would say folks around here are not complacent but WA is nearly as lenient NM about property crime

Hard to say, but I put it on their parents.

There's no doubt our education system needs some reforms, but the problem today (IMO) is that parents have shirked their parental responsibilities and have placed them on the teachers and school system. Yet, when the teachers or school disciplines a child the parents raise heck. Back in my youth, some kids were always getting suspended, and a few expelled. If a school did that now they'd probably be sued by the parents because of their child's "loss of educational opportunity".

Unless there's a mental illness issue, I place the blame for a child's poor behavior and lack of academic achievement solely on the parents.

Scott
Couldnt agree more. Kids are just vessels of what we put in them. Perfect storm of wokeness (I use that term as a card carrying lib), destructive media, single parent households, a victim mentality, and loosening of drug laws. Put all that together and add unrealistic demands on educators will make for schools where anything goes. Its all about the stats. Too many people are tardy to school. Not a problem, everyone is given 15 minutes grace. Too many kids failing. Not a problem, lowest possible grade is now a 50 and no deadlines. Too many kids being suspended. No more suspensions. Then add elected school officials that have the spine of a wet paper towel and you’re done for. Don’t get me started…nevermind, too late.

My observations point to New Mexico crime is for very different reasons than crime in Washington, Colorado, California, and Oregon.

Of note I have three F350s in my driveway this very moment in a New Mexico subdivision, and these trucks have been sitting for months. If these same trucks were parked in a like subdivision in Western Washington, I am quite confident parts of the trucks likely would be missing, to include catalytic converters.

I posted before, spending time in the courthouse of Lee County, Louisiana, a very poor area. I saw a case where a man stole his neighbors rake. He was locked up until trial, convicted at trial, and jailed for three days after the conviction. No days off sentencing for pre trial confinement. Very poor area, but yet significantly safer than Western Washington.

Imagine if Western Washington had the same process as Lee County, Louisiana for arresting, pre trial confinement, prosecution, and sentencing. I don't think mail boxes would be broken into very frequently in Western Washington.

Not rocket science.

Let me tell you something else about church. I realized the other day that many of today’s kids potentially have very little access to exposure to successful, normal adults. The depiction of adults that they see are on their phones (which we know is often the worst example) or their whacked out parent. Church, if nothing else, showed kids what grown people are supposed to look like and act like. Declines in Boy Scouts, etc are also removed sources of good adult examples.
