I caught two boys stealing mail

I would call the Sheriff's Office and ask for a report/incident number. Then I'd call the Postmaster for the local PO and reference that number to the USPS. Let them get the begeezus scared out of them for a federal felony. Probably won't be prosecuted, but certainly would be investigated. And I'd tell all the neighbors up and down the street, along with showing them the pic so they can recognize the boys.

And be on the lookout for retribution from the kids; if they're dumb enough to steal mail, they're also dumb enough to set your car on fire, etc.

Stand firm, but fair. The best way for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing.

The boys committed a serious crime. This ain't pencils from school... They need to pay the price for their actions. And apparantly this is not their 1st time...
The optimal outcome would be they learn their lesson. Good on you @slo town
I do not want to consider other outcomes. We have enough dishonest people as it is.

I wasn't the greatest kid growing up.
Looking back now, I feel my father gave up on me at age 10.
But when I now wake up every morning, I am now the person who I want to be.
Your father giving up on you at age 10 is sad, but look at it this way. I think him doing that sent you a powerful message, one that stuck with you. I can only assume your comment "I am now the person who I want to be." is a good thing, Maybe it's a result of your father's actions.

Mail theft very common here. But done by people much older than those kids. We had to get a $450/ yr po. Box as too much was being stolen and we were getting bombarded by CC stuff that had been stolen from our box.
Everybody should sign up for Informed Delivery.
The P.O. will send you an email showing images of any letters you will receive that day.
It's just another tool in the toolbox.

While I mostly agree with you Scott, and do think that parenting is a big part of the issue, if we take a step back and look at it from a bigger picture perspective, what is contributing to less than optimal parenting?

A person could argue that things like inflation far out pacing pay increase, and an increasing divide between the have mosts and the have moderates and leasts is making it harder and harder for one parent to stay at home, for the family unit to not be under financial stress, etc.

Because my step father is most likely a sociopath (he's been to prison multiple times for fraud), I ended up reading a fair amount about the ASPD spectrum (formerly referred to as psychopathy and/or sociopathy) over a period of time (partly because I was born almost the exact opposite, very high affective empathy and conscience, and I just couldn't and didn't understand that people like him could exist, but just knew from hard experience that they did).

I have come to the conclusion that the biggest picture perspective can be boiled down to the following: More and more people on the ASPD spectrum (over time) have come into positions of enormous material influence, wealth, and power (especially in the US, but in the rest of the world as well), and either unconsciously and/or consciously are trying to remake the world in their distorted image. There is a trickle down effect, sort of societal induced kind of entropy. I think this issue transcends mundane, surface politics and sides of an aisle to be honest--it seems pretty obvious that these plutocratic forces fund and play both sides of the aisle in the US.

The wet dream of every clever, relatively more self controlled, and financially wealthy ASPD person is total control. I think for the first time in known human history, there is the accumulation of resources and wealth into the hands of a relative few, along with advanced technology (that allows for mass spying and data collection), that is making that wet dream become a potential reality (and perhaps plan). It has been tried in the past in various different ways and guises, but the masses don't respond well to outright dictatorship-there tends to be revolutions. I think the current crop has looked at, and learned from, the past and realized that to be successful, they had to build "golden cages" rather than outright dictatorship.

More of a gradual whittling away of rights, resources, etc for the masses. And ever increasing survival pressure, but slowly, but while dangling the carrot of the "American dream" all the while. Most people are relatively unconscious pawns in all this. Deep down, I think most people really don't want to know just how bad things really are, and how bad the plans for them/us are. It is potentially more terrifying than any hollywood horror movie premise, because it is real life and engenders such an overwhelming feeling of powerlessness/helplessness.

So instead, we focus on lesser evils, pick a political side to rarara or disparage in the attempt to not become fully conscious of all the above.

I think if we could somehow get rid of all or most of the ASPD folks in positions of enormous influence and power, we would start to see things improve socially. But as that is nowhere close to probable to occur, I think we're likely up the creek without a paddle, short of some kind of naturally caused/facilitated collapse or the like.

Not to mention drunken mail box car crashes, LOL.
They use baseball bats around here. Several years ago a group of teens drove around and destroyed half the town's mailboxes. Literally several hundred of them. It actually made the television news.

Turned out one of the kids was the son of the Chief of the Fire Department in a nearly city. To the father's credit, via an intermediary, everyone got their mailboxes replaced with one of equal quality to the ones that were destroyed.

When I went to this government building to submit my expenses, I was given a letter of apology from the family and told that all expenses for the mailbox replacements were coming out of the kid's college fund. A few days later I got my check in the mail. I imagine this cost the family many thousands of dollars.

THIS is how you raise your children!

@VersysVsWhat, thank you for your view on this. To a very large extent I agree with you, but also there are gaps that I presume you left out on purpose - stuff that might cause moderator action. I suspect those "gaps" are something that we would agree on as well.

I will add one comment. Social media and the internet are rotting people's brains. "Influencers" are toxic to society, yet some make millions doing it. FWIW, I do not consider BITOG social media. BITOG is a library of information that has off topic discussions like this.

Once again, thanks for your thoughtful missive.

In our semi-rural neighborhood people had been complaining about missing mail the last couple of weeks.

I was sitting in my office (probably on BITOG!) and saw these two 13 or 14 year old boys (I later learned they were brothers) taking mail from my neighbor's mailbox across the street.

I got up and quietly sneaked outside, only to see one of them take the mail out of our mailbox and tuck it under his sweatshirt. I moved fast and appeared out of nowhere. The second boy disappeared and was nowhere to be seen.

I confronted the kid and warned him that he better not run because I was fully capable of chasing him down. I saw the bulge inside his sweatshirt and demanded to see what he was hiding. He didn't cooperate so I took out my iPhone and took a picture of him. I think he realized he was screwed at this point.

I persisted with my demands to see what he was hiding. I warned him that stealing mail was a serious crime, but if he gave me his stolen mail stash I'd let him go. In my mind, a generous offer but no luck.

So, iPhone in hand I entered 911 on my phone and showed him the number. Give me the mail now or I'm going to call. Still no luck, so I called 911. While waiting for the Sheriff's Department to arrive I once again warned him I was fast on my feet and advised him not to run.

A Sheriff's Deputy arrived in just 3 or 4 minutes. The Deputy searched him and found about 50 pieces of mail from several addresses, including ours! BUSTED!

But where did the other kid disappear to? With law enforcement there the other kid, his brother, crawled out from under the big oleander bush by our mail box. He had another 50 pieces of mail hidden in his pants. BUSTED!

The Deputy was NOT impressed and loaded the two of them in the back of his cruiser and took them to wherever.

Obviously, just some kids doing mischief.

Any seasoned thief would have run away, and would have known that you taking their picture is not evidence.

Wow.

But the irony to me is this. The boomers are the ones who complain the most about the younger generation - yet there were the ones who raised this generation!

I'm a boomer and ran a tight ship, a ship so tight my parents used to think I was too hard on them. But understand, I never laid a hand, not once, on either one of them.

Grounding and taking away privileges does wonders. Our oldest son had a friend I didn't trust or like. I banned this kid from our home and banned our son from going to his house.

Well, I found out our son went to this kids house. I grounded our son for a FULL MONTH. The only time he was allowed outside for that entire MONTH was to go to school. This was a big penalty for a high school sophomore.

The result? Both my sons are respectful, law abiding, and highly successful in their careers.

And another thing - teach your kids to look people in the eye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Scott

Boomers would be the grandparents to these kids. Even Gen X could be grandparents to them. Whomever raised them, they did a poor job. At 13-14 they could even be doing this for a Gang. As older gang members know that at that age, likely nothing will happen to them, especially in Ca.

I know a lot of people are thinking it's a federal crime and it is, but in this case, concurrent jurisdiction means its a crime both federal and state and a federal prosecutor probably wont pursue the case but the case will be handled as a state crime through the county court system.

You did the right thing all around . Keep a eye out for retribution . It's sad I even had to type that . 👍

Maybe time for a couple security cameras? I have been hugely impressed by the latest g6 cams from unifi.
although for this wireless might be an easier install.

AI detections are nice.. here is a deer from yesterday way out back.

or this nightvision possum.
Works for faces(in range) people, and vehicles too.

Always easy to blame Boomers. But I thought the same thing. These kids were not raised by Boomers.

The baseball bat thing on the mailboxes happened several year ago. The two boys are probably in prison by now. 🫤

I installed Ring cameras awhile back because mountain lions had been seen in the immediate area, including two of them walking up my neighbor's driveway just two houses down. There are a lot off deer in the area, which I assume attracts them. Sue and I have been disappointed that we haven't seen any wildlife, not even a raccoon or skunk. Oh well, just as well.

Now that we have the cameras I can't imagine being without them.

See ^^^. Mine are wireless and battery powered. As you no doubt know, you can zoom in on the images and see amazing clarity, even at night. And they have microphones and speakers.
