I can no longer eat fast food

Easy there, man. No one is blaming fast food joints for obesity. We're saying two things:

1. Fast food places have bad food.
2. Eating at fast food places can make you fat and/or sick.

Sounds like most of us agree on those points so far.

Yea, I was just making a blanket statement, not directed at one person.

But, to your points:

1. Why is it bad??? Its fatty and salty. Ok. Are these "bad" things? If so why??? Fat and sodium are very much needed in a healthy diet. Just like iron and vitamin A. Now, just like vitamin A and iron, if you eat too much fat or sodium, you can and will run into health issues that can veryvwell turn fatal.

2. If you ate a big mac once a week, in place of lunch you would normally have, do you think you would be any more unhealthy than you are right now?? I do not think so.

Im just playing devils advocate here.

Most fast food is pretty bad, I will agree. I don't find the big global brands very appealing, though I will eat their food if it is the easiest choice.

I like smaller chains and independently owned fast food places. There is a small chain of fast food restaurants called Cook Out around NC. Their food is awesome, and is usually cheaper than the big brands. Plus they will put cheddar cheese sauce on anything.

When I went to Florida a few months ago, I said "To heck with all the fast food joints" and was determined to fine some fine BBQ.

Old Clinton's in Gray, GA was it a bit too far off the beaten path so I skipped it. http://www.oldclintonbbq.com/

Ended up stopping at The Smokin' Pig BBQ in Valdosta, GA. http://www.smoknpig.com/

Brisket sandwich was above average. The cornbread was fantastic and the Brunswick Stew was incredible. All for about $1 more than a McD "value meal". (which of course, contains no value). This could feed two, which makes is a great value compared to any of the fast food joints.

I liked it so much, I ate there on the return trip back.

Very true.

In this context, I think "bad" simply means that it's among the least nutritious and least tasty food available. Maybe a more accurate term would be "not very good."

Again, very true. I'm pretty sure that when we talk about people getting sick and/or fat from fast food, we're talking about people who eat it a LOT (e.g. cases in which it represents most of a person's diet).

we do a lot of cooking at home but we eat out very occasionally. when it is once in a while it might be a treat. its been a few years since we've been to red lobster, but I thought it was pretty good. we went to olive garden maybe 2 yrs ago after not being there for a few years and that too was a pleasant surprise, I liked it.
as for McD's, once in a while I get a jonsin' for a big mac but I wouldn't try to eat there regularly. occasional fast food is not going to hurt you, everything in moderation.
I disagree on the idea that subway is 'better'; please. there are so many better places to get a hoagie (that's PA-speak for a sub)made with a better quality of meat. granted, too much processed meat is also not good for you, but subway has to save money somewhere and its in the quality of the meat.

Sorry, but to say that RL and OG are 'good', you don't know what good outside food really is.

RL is way over priced with horrible service and quality. The same with OG. ANY dedicated privately owned seafood and Italian rest, will DECIMATE any RL and OG 24/7, 365. Just Google for the rest near you and see, smell and TASTE the difference. No comparison.

good job on the over-generalization and assumptions, thanks.
I would hope you would understand 'good' can and does mean different things to different people, and tastes differ among people (amazing concept!)
notice I didn't say RL and OG were 'great' or 'epic'; I just said they were pretty good.
really, unless you have eaten at EVERY privately owned seafood place and EVERY chain place, your opinion doesn't really matter and has no basis.
sorry to break it to you, but there are some seriously crummy local joints selling badly prepared seafood.
I was actually quite disappointed w/ a local chowder house nearby that everyone 'raves' about; haven't been back.
we visit a small little lobster place in Portland, ME also; it's pretty good, but expensive, and we go because its a local authentic 'hole in the wall' non-touristy place.
I actually preferred getting a lobster roll at any one of a multitude of places in Maine.
and lastly, I prefer seafood like my wife prepares it. she's from Louisiana, and (here's MY over-generalization)seafood from Louisiana is the BEST in the world.

Gulf coast seafood really is some fine stuff. Oysters from Alabama are particularly outstanding. Higher quality can't be had for any price anywhere else, IMO.

I must also agree that there are some local dumps that serve stuff I wouldn't feed my dog. A few local mexican, chinese, italian, catfish, and barbecue joints come to mind.

There is a prevailing trend right now of people wanting to be hip and cool by rejecting things they see as "corporate" (which is the new "fascist" in the sense that those who most often use the term cannot define it). I'll be glad to see this fad blow over so I don't have to listen to the self righteous hipsters pontificate about the benefits of drinking 'fair trade' coffee.

People love to wear not eating fast food (or macro-brews, or whatever else) as some sort of badge of honor. I'll put my skills in the kitchen and use of fresh ingredients up against anybody, but make no mistake I can still appreciate a taco bell chalupa or arby's roast beef sandwich. Enjoying "real" food and indulging in fast food or other stuff from time to time are not mutually exclusive.

Very true.

Even still, when the choice between fast food and good food exists, I'm choosing the better product.

well said, both of you. I love arby's too, esp when I get the coupons out of the sunday paper.

Oh great....

now I'm a hipster douchenozzle because I don't like McFrankenWendy'sKing.
lol.gif

But I'm rejecting things that are both bad for me and just plain bad.
Ex: I like Church's Fried Chicken. I know it's not good for me but fried chicken tastes good and it takes a long time to skillet fry up some chicken for myself so Church's works for me. I do not like KFC (aka: Kentucky Dried Pigeon) because it is tiny like a pigeon and it is bathed in confectioner's salt before pressure cooking.
Church's: Marinade, dredge in flour, fry
KFC: dredge in salt, pressure cook
Has nothing to do with the size of the company.

Now I'm going to go hopelessly clog my arteries with a breast and maybe a drumstick.

I wasn't speaking about you. But if you think the shoe fits, go ahead and wear it. The fact that you're talking about these things in terms of health and taste rather than some [censored] anti-corporate ideology (and the fact that you'll admit to eating at Church's) shows that you in fact are not the kind of person I'm talking about.

I like Church's too, but I think Popeye's is better. great red beans and dirty rice too!
IIRC, they are now owned by the same people. don't know how they pulled that off.
I too can't stand KFC, can't compare.

BLAAAAAH. No wonder American's are so fat and unhealthy if they're eating that [censored] every day.

That's not exactly a newsflash. Anyone with even a small amount of common sense has known for years that fast food is garbage. I haven't eaten at a fast food joint (most franchise restaurants like Applebees or Red Lobster included) for 20+ years, and don't ever plan to put that garbage into my body again. It's hard for me to fathom that people actually put that stuff in their mouths.

Uh-diet soda isn't exactly heathy, and Subway isn't any better than other fast food joints. It might come as a shock to learn that the many common Subway sandwiches are actually higher in calories than some standard orders from McDonalds. Go take a look at their website and download the nutritional values pdf. Then take a look at not only the calories, but the sodium as well. Then realize that they're only showing the 6" portion size-a lot of people waddle out of there with a footlong, so you can double the calorie and sodium values.

I'm certainly glad that I've never been dumb enough to either drink that much or eat at Taco Bell, let alone both at the same time.

While your reasoning is slightly...bizarre, your conclusion is correct. It's not the fast food that's to blame, it's actually peoples lack of education regarding nutrition that can be blamed.

John Hopkins recently did a study that indicated that by 2015 nearly 75% of the population will be overweight, along with the health issues that come with being obese that will help skyrocket the cost of fat peoples health care.

The problem boils down to who gets to pay for the health care of people who aren't responsible enough to eat healthy. Heart disease, diabetes, stroke and joint problems are just a few issues that are on the rise because people eat an unhealthy diet.

I just had my annual physical this morning. At 67 I'm extremely healthy, my blood pressure is normal, and all of my numbers will come back excellent as they always do. I don't do anything special-no magic pills, no whacked out specialty diet, just a little common sense. I eat healthy and avoid fast and processed food, and I also don't drink any soda pop at all.

My health care costs are very low, but I have to foot the bill through insurance for obese people who are not responsible enough to maintain a healthy weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Therefore, since I have to pay for their irresponsible behaviour I have every right to complain about their irresponsible behaviour.

Wow, never been intoxicated, no questionable food in over 20 years, no soda pop...you must be the most interesting man in the world!!! stay thirsty my friend!

Your ability to be holier than I am is just awesome. That's so cool!

I'm not even mad that you called me dumb. I'm just in awe of your holiness. Cast all the stones you want, man. You've earned it.

I'm actually OK with that.

And, for the record, I stand by my statement that double decker tacos go hard after about the third beer of your fourth six pack.
