Hyundai Ioniq 5 pulls off 2022 World Car of the Year hat trick -autoblog.com

from a big picture perspective, I find the hand-wringing over EV's by some to be funny and entertaining, because it's the exact same tired tropes that were constantly trotted out on hear 15-20 years ago over hybrids. The Prius was more vilified than the Model 3 at that time.

Anything that threatens what someone believes is going to be met with scorn by some, challenged by others, and blindly accepted by some. This hasn't changed since Plato's time. I think most sit in that middle bell curve and look at them objectively. There's no point in even engaging the first group. In the face of any convincing evidence they'll just dig their heels in deeper.

Well said Jack!

Only partly correct. Gasoline taxes pay a huge role in the construction and maintenance of roads.
This is more of a local and state problem that drastically needs a solution as EV owners are getting away without paying taxes.
One thing for sure you can bet government will find a way! 🙃
Ever hear of big oil subsidies? How about bailouts?

Coal, oil, and natural gas received $5.9 trillion in subsidies in 2020 — or roughly $11 million every minute — according to a new analysis from the International Monetary Fund.

As they say, everything counts in large amounts.

I knew I would hear from you🤣
I don’t like subsidies, I don’t like bail outs, I don’t like government intervention and I don’t want more of it
… and the last person on earth I would trust is the international monetary fund.

And if EV is are going to drive on the roads my taxes pay for I don’t want to pay their way either, More so this is an elite group the common people can’t even afford these vehicles.

Yes they have to be taxed, right now the taxpayers are supplementing the selling price of many of these cars in the actual purchase price itself with $7500 rebates.
The EV owners right now are getting away with not maintaining and building our roads, I can’t wait for that to stop either!
In addition non-EV owners will be paying to upgrade the electric grid and power plants.
In some places the customer enjoys 10-12K in total rebates. People who ride the bus, I don’t know who they are stealing money from, but maybe that whole subsidy of public transport for the poor, disabled, blind, etc, needs to stop. I will never fly on an airplane again, but I am paying towards my next door neighbor who gets big bucks from the FAA working in the air terminal tower. It just isn’t fair, life. We need each our own little islands.

You are certainty entitled to your view. But the government is subsidizing the infrastructure-so you will pay for that-whether you choose to own an electric vehicle or not.
Just like they subsidized gas, and we paid for it... as a matter of fact it seems we'll pay pretty much whatever the asking price is. By "we" I mean the majority, who are responsible for the paths we take whether individuals like it or not.

It's so bizarre to watch people's biased protests. They protest the new scenario that is exactly like the old scenario that they now embrace and defend. 🐒

What do these infrastructure thieves think they are doing?

This is what’s great about democracy, we can all vote accordingly. I am definitely a minimalist government guy.
But it really irks me when people bring up how the petroleum industry is subsidized with unsubstantiated unexplained numbers with no details to justify using my tax money to directly give $7500 to people purchasing cars in the $60-$120,000 range or any price range. Come on already I mean like, why ?

No answer needed just vote accordingly.
We really are off the subject though but I already likened the award in the OP as a media and industry event full of people patting themselves on the back, like they do in Hollywood, it does nothing for the common person of modest income.

Even the government is smart enough to know they have to beef up the grid to make electric vehicles viable.
You're giving them too much credit. They're the ones who are blocking the construction of ANY new fossil fuel or nuclear power plants. And putting restrictions on the entire fossil fuel industry. How is that, "smart"?

Agreed. But EVs as mass produced vehicles are in their infancy. Things are changing. And for once, America is leading the way.
I saw semiconductors mfg go from mostly American fabs to maybe 10% today. And we are paying the price, big time.

Looking at a point in time is short term thinking. I never think in less than 5 year plans; everything else is noise.

I'm sure you know GM/Honda are committed to lower priced EVs. And I'm sure the Koreans will be on board as well.
That may be true, but the cost to produce batteries is now going up due to the cost of raw materials and production shortages.

We've come to expect prices of technological things to come down over time. And for a time, batteries have done so. When a capable battery pack costs a manufacturer $20K and another $5K to assemble into a working package with a cooling management and built in charger, the car won't be $25K, it will be $60K.

By now, it's become clear just how big a battery pack needs to be. The magic number is 80KWh for a modest range vehicle and 135KWh for a modest range pickup truck. 100/180KWh for "so-called" extended range vehicles, which can only go a real-world 250-300 miles at speed on the highway.

Short range EV's are available in other countries and have been so for quite some time now. There is a very good reason they don't sell here.

Take a careful look at the retail price of 18650 batteries now! $10 each for the best Samsung cells!!!!!!! AND $5 each for lower capacity cells.

Now consider the 7920 individual cells in a Plaid's battery pack.

Was looking at the Bolt end of 2020. Calif charges $100 per year on EV registration and some extra on purchase, but grandfathers in EV older than 2020. That isn’t fair. I am not on the side of EV drivers getting a free ride at all, take the devils advocate position often. But bicyclists etc I don’t know what to say. Most have cars probably.

Just watched Motorweek latest episode, tested the Kia version of this Hyundai I think, seemed pretty impressed with it.

Lately a lot of them are riding like idiots, and getting run over.
Not the woman hand signaling left.
The idea was they are using the infrastructure. So is it fair? How about the blind man riding the bus for a dollar with no one else in the bus?
