Hi I’ve recently purchased a 2008 Hyundai entourage and I’m hoping to get some advise. I’m wondering wether I should use 5w20 or 5w30 or will it matter either way. Also, wether I should use synthetic or conventional. The manual specifically recommends Quaker state, is this just a marketing partnership or is that brand of oil better for this vehicle?

The manual says to use:
API Service SJ, SL or above, ILSAC GF-3 or above
(SAE 5W-20, 5w30) and change oil every 7500 miles.
The oil cap says 5w20.

We live in New England and its driven a mix of short trips around town and 40 mile+ trips. It will be driven about 8000 miles per year.

Thanks!

I would use 5w30. I prefer full synthetic for winter months. I like Pennzoil platinum.

Others will mention the current rebates that may help you pick your oil.

No offense, but it's a 10 year old car. Without knowing it's history and especially if it has over 100K miles, I'd lean towards 5w30 in whatever brand you like. But if you're going to run it out to 7500 miles, synthetic wouldn't be a bad idea.

This

Run a 5w30 synthetic or synthetic blend of your choice.

I personally use for older vehicles a Syn blend
NAPA SYNTHETIC BLEND is a nice oil made by Valvoline

Thank you for the reply!
If I understand correctly you suggest 5w30 due to wear considering the age of the vehicle and that the 5w30 will have a bit more viscosity to compensate for that wear?

Thanks again!

That, but those engines, the 2.4 and NA 2.0 seem to just "like" 5w30 better.

Quaker State is a marketing partnership. My dealership uses Valvoline. I have used the 5w30 Pennzoil Platinum with good results in my Elantra and will be my winter fill. MPG does not seem to be affected using 5w30.

Yep, the Quaker State mention is just a marketing / partnership kind of thing... however, it is good oil and depending on your actual use of the vehicle, temps, etc., you could use either the 5w20 or 5w30 conventional Quaker State Advanced Durability for say 4 ~ 6,000 miles or 6 month intervals or the full synthetic Ultimate Durability for say 8 ~ 10,000 miles or one year and should be well served. They also have a 0w20 synthetic that I've seen rated as allowing the least wear of ALL oils in some test on www.bestsyntheticoilfilter.com ... it was followed by their 5w20 synthetic.

For about 15 years, I always used Amsoil for my synthetic oil and was even a dealer... but now, due to the quality of all name brand oils, I use whatever is the best deal. I am presently using Mobil 1 (EP, AFE, ESP) and Castrol Edge for my synthetic oils due to being bought on clearance, but if I didn't already have these in my stash and was looking to buy off the shelf today... Mobil 1 Extended Performance, Quaker State, Valvoline Maxlife, or even Walmart's Super Tech would be my choices. The significant other's 2014 Hyundai Accent was started on 5w20 conventional for 5,000 mile intervals and went to Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w20 and now, Mobil 1 0w30 for 10,000 mile intervals ... the car is driven about 2,000 miles a month and has 85,000 miles on it now with minimal consumption on 5w20 and none noticed on the 0w30... no top offs needed on either one. You really can't go wrong with any good oil in these cars as long as it's changed at a reasonable interval. I have used Wix oil filters. BTW, I use Valvoline Maxlife ATF in the automatic transmission... drained and refilled about every 30,000 miles.

We just sold this car to one of the daughters and purchased a 2018 Elantra... it's first change was on the dealer's dime at 5,000 miles (2 months) and they said they used Valvoline 5w20... the rest of the oil changes will be on me and I'll change it again at 10,000 miles on the odometer and will likely use either the Mobil 1 or the Castrol Edge in 0w30 out of the stash. Hyundai recommends changing the oil and filter at 3,750 miles or 6 months with severe use driving and at 7,500 miles or one year with normal use driving on these two cars and doesn't distinguish between conventional or synthetic. I'll likely go 10,000 mile intervals on synthetic oil as I do with the Accent... as long as it's all highway miles in short time frames. I hope your Hyundai does well for you...
