How stable is your job?

Could you explain?

Oh, to answer the original question, my hours have been cut way back (truck driver). I'm fairly secure because I have 13 years of experience, hazmat, tanker endorsements, and can do anything the company needs. I've been with my company 9 years. It's scary, though. In my travels I see more than the average person of what's really going on with our country. People have been losing their manufacturing jobs for years. First it was the steel industry in Pittsburgh, Youngstown. Then it was cars, parts (NAFTA) and the market being flooded with Chinese sheet. The whole country is becoming one big Pittsburgh of the early 1980's. Let's hope it's not too late. Things won't change until our trade policies change.

Agreed, but the US Chamber of Commerce is fighting for more H1-B work visas, so they think differently than most of us.

Because they are paid for by the ..... employers.

Tempest, what is an IOU?

No. Not here. But I will say even on BITOG if a company is profitable they are called greedy, crooked and worse. If a company is not profitable....uh they aren't paying the folks for long.

I am in Process Improvement Engineering for Cardiac Ablation therapy. Hopefully it is safe, but who knows. My Manager just got let go today!!

What he's not saying is the side effect of the reaction to greedy thieving people of grandeur ..the REALLY productive private sector will suffer.

It ends up being a situation like a kingpin thug in prison and you're the new "fresh meat".

"Hey, kid ..it's either me (the financiers and bloated Distinguished Gentlemen) ..or them three (pointing to three enormous convicts that look hungry ..their names are strangling regulation, inflation, and recession).

How do you want your poking?

This is what leads to the notions of "leave us alone to enjoy our life of grandeur. There's no hope for your kind".

In this economy, how stable is your current job? What is your current job? What are your plans if things go to the c-rapper, and you find yourself out of a job?

I work in the restaurant industry and while our sales are down they are Flat over last year which is excellent considering the economies current condition.

I got a very good bonus for last years performance ($11K) and a promotion in recent months... I'm not too worried but I have cut back my spending and I'm building up my Emergency fund more in case the day does come...

Everybody's gotta eat... Hopefully at my restaurant chain!

Soory to hear about your misfortune, Wayne - hope it all works out!

My Mom works for the LCBO (Liquor Store in Ontario run by the Government) and her hours actually went up. Guess we know where people spend money when they are unemployed!

if it weren't for a major highway project going through here I'd be counting my toes right now.

working 50 to 60 hours every week

all staff have been advised - do not work overtime, work regular hours for regular pay. admin staff in danger of being slashed. I can however charge mine as the highway is a big money maker for the company

so in a way my job is stable but if they don't need me on the highway any more i may be stuffed if that happens during '09.

thinking of going into more stable employment like teaching - great government benefits and there is a shortage of math teachers.

I was laid off December 4th of 08 after 8 1/2 years. First job out of college. Several of my friends have been laid off. My dad is out of work and my father in-law as well. I have not seen things this bad in my lifetime. I am very concerned about the future of this country.

I have had 5 year IT contract with a Fortune 20 company. They let all the contractors go in my division. I am last man(contractor) standing until the end of Q1 sadly in a few weeks.

Not sure what the future brings. Just networking thus far. Fortunately payment is behind 3 months so I get paid until June.

I do have a background otherwise as field (civil) engineer. I may go back to construction inspection as the projects seem to be funded now.

it's not just your country mate, it's world wide.

True, it's world wide. It's going to be interesting to see if the U.S. can maintain it's edge globally. According to doomsayers like Schiff, the U.S. is in for a rude awakening in our standard of living. He often jokes about how China is more capitalistic than the U.S.. They also can pay for their own stimulus w/o borrowing. It has to end. Baby boomers have really failed.

I've worked for the State of Warshington for almost 30 years now- Department of Social and Health Services for almost 12 years and the Department of Transportation for almost 18 years now. In public service it is very true that we tend to be paid considerably less than the private sector but we also tend to get paid longer too, i.e., our jobs tend to be pretty stable.

I work for a small 2 branch dealership,Mitsibishi cars,Case tractors and other agricultural equipment.Car sales are well down of course, instead of selling several cars a week, now it is one every several weeks.Farmers are being hit with much lower forecast payouts, and are cutting out new purchases. But both workshops are busy keeping the old stuff going. My productivity last month was 106%,well up on my usual low 80's.So long as they keep fixing the old stuff we might get through.I have no idea how it looks to the bean counter, but on the floor we look ok.

I think working in the power stations, in engineering, I'm fairly secure.

Wholesale price of electricity has crashed due to some peaking GTs being introduced to the market and squashing the prices drastically.

Even if the worst happens and we get sold, they'll still need the maintenance engineering.
