How New Of an Engine Can Skip Oil Filter Change?

I stuck a Royal Purple filter on my Tacoma when it had 10k miles on the odometer. The owner's manual calls for 5k OCIs, which I adhere to.

Is the engine broken in enough to get by without changing the filter until the odometer hits 20k, even though I plan to change the oil itself at the 15k mark?

With the engine being relatively new, I imagine that there are still insolubles in the oil, but nothing that would clog a filter.

Any opinions?
 
Given some of the published (lack of) efficiency of Toyota oil filters I have read, changing the oil is apparently much more important to them. That Royal Purple is already filtering at a higher efficiency and should have no problem lasting 10k or more with your regular oil changes.

Usually OCI's are 10k and that is normally when the FF is dumped too. This is with OEM filters with a reputation of being 50% efficient.

All Japanese and Korean brands here require 5K KILOMETERS OCI. Thats insane but it all comes down to business, the more you change your oil the more they can bill you.

You're fine.

In a modern engine with current machining and manufacturing processes 80% of the break-in has happened by the time the oil has come up to temp on the initial drive home from the dealer.

Plus filters get better with age... The large holes in filters get plugged with debris and the filter becomes more effective. Even if your bypass valve is opening slightly (most unlikely) you are still running a "bypass filtration" system where your oil is still flowing in some amount through your "plugged" oil filter and the filter is removing smaller particles than it would if it was new and fresh.

It is very clearly 5k for normal service. It is the 1TR-FE engine.

Very interesting. I would have thought at least it had an OLM. 5k seems pretty short by today's standards.

Where are you getting your facts?

The factory filter is not inefficient at all.

But there are oil filters on the commercial market with purportedly higher efficiencies.

And some of them suffer from shoddy construction.

But I'd use the OEM Toyota filters without concern for your planned OCI.
 
Filters become more efficient as the media loads up. So running a filter longer actually traps smaller and smaller particulate vs a new filter.

That being said I am running rebadged tough guards for 20000 miles. Upon dissection there isn't an over abundance of agglomeration and could very likely run for longer

Even then, the 10k OCI only applies to certain engines. I owned a 4-cyl Tacoma that took 0w20, but still couldn't do 10k without voiding the warranty.

Per Toyota


Only Toyota vehicles in which 0w-20 synthetic oil is required (except for the 2TR-FE and 3UR-FBE Engines*) have been approved for extended oil change intervals of 10,000-miles/12-months. (However, you should continue to check the oil level regularly and top off if needed. That will help your engine get the full benefit of synthetic oil.)
