How much over the speed limit is too much?

You live in a very lenient traffic law area then. Drivers around here get huge fines and more for going that fast over the speed limit.

As for the speed, your traffic moves unlike ours in most days. 15-20mph would be considered normal on our freeways here.

No I would be doing the speed limit on dash cam footage I would post just to show you how fast people would be passing me. It's insane the qualifying type driving that goes on. I had a Mercedes pass me so fast that the wind squeezed between our vehicles as they came up along the left side of me was so much that it pushed me in the lane like a strong wind gust. He has to be doing 200kph (124 mph)

If I am going 5-6-7mph over the limit in good flowing traffic in the left lane and you come up behind me going even faster and I cannot move over then the burden is on you to slow down. This was the gist of the conversation. There are people who drive timidly. I see them every hour I drive. I go around them. I don't get bent because I was inconvenienced somehow.

I know you are pressured for time having to drive 200km a day for your commute ( remembered from another thread) and then work a full day, yet you have time to post here constantly. I hope you are not posting while driving?



I worked with a guy that got a ticket for leg lane hogging. Told me he was going a little over the speed limit and a car came up behind him. He didn't have room to move over so he didn't. The car was a cop and put the flashing lights on. He moved over and the cop gave him a ticket. He told the cop, "There wasn't room to move over. That's why I was in the left lane." Cop replied, "You manged to move over after I put the lights on. Here's your ticket."

I spend most of my time driving near Chicago, where I see all the crazies. Yes, most everyone here drives over the limit, which is why I say I try to go with the flow, but then there's the mega speeding idiots, the ones going yet another 15-20 faster than everyone else, the ones who tailgate you if you get in their way...I may think like a geezer, but I still know how to drive...that's more than I can say for 90% of drivers these days...

Speed does not equal better driving. In this day and age when people only think of themselves, we see more reckless driving on the roads.

Something to add here; these F&F drivers that like to cut in and out across all lanes of a highway in order to get somewhere two minutes earlier cause a lot of frustration and danger to everyone else. With the adaptive cruise control becoming more prevalent, I have experienced a number of times a reckless driver cut in thus triggering my auto braking. In many cases this braking is more sudden than what I would use with my foot. This triggers the same reaction behind me and the domino effect takes place.

The comments suggesting passing on the right are also bad advice. It's obvious that proper driving rules and skills are not being taught anymore, rather many kids get their skills from watching movies.

Yeah like the Cabbies. I just got back from Chicago, was there for a trade show. I feared for my life they way they would floor it in rush hour down a left lane and then veer in front of traffic behind them. I purposely sat in the back out of the 3 of us and was holding on for dear life. It was insane how they drove and no one honked they would just step on the brake as though it was normal. That city is nuts.

I have this Radar Cruise Control system and Collision Avoidance System in the Highlander and I find that it over-reacts so I don't use it unless there is very little traffic.

The guy flying up is passing in the passing lane. As long as he doesn't have anyone on his rear his lane discipline is spot-on. Tailgating is actually a sign of respect (gah!) because he's not passing on the right, which disrespects everyone in sight who are expecting these two guys in the left lane to follow the rules and are patiently waiting for the situation to un-cork itself. It's a car-body-language way of saying, psst, your turn, move over.

If I'm 3rd in line, I give the guy 2nd in line plenty of space for safety, as he's the one handling the thankless task of tailgating the wrong-lane-offender.

I only suggested passing on the right as a better alternative to tailgating, but neither is a good option...and if anyone thinks passing on the right is more dangerous than tailgating, I'd love to hear how...

If traffic is relatively light and I come up on someone in the left lane driving slower than me, I will follow for awhile, and not tailgating like an agressive maniac. If they don't move over when they can, then I will pass on the right. Of course if traffic is heavy, there's no use trying to drive aggressively because you'll really not get anywhere any faster to make a difference.

And yeah, tailgating is not "respectful", but just something that is dangerous and induces road rage.

Is it aggressive to wish someone would get out of the way so they can just get out of the way? It's not really any of your business (unless you're a cop) why the person who wants to pass, wants to pass.

If the guy really was going faster than the right lanes and couldn't get over because of heavy traffic, then that cop was just being a hole and having a bad day. If course they would be able to get right after the cop flipped his lights on because all the other cars around them are going to back off and make room. Cops doing stunts like that just mess up traffic and cause chaos around them.
