How many are keeping their vehicles longer ?

Well, I have been doing some investigation into Lube Control's products LC20 and FP60. After what I have found, I have ordered and received my products. I am going to use these to increase the life of the engine and increase my OCI's. I have had it in for the past couple of days and I can say the truck feels different. Better I should say. It is more quiet and runs smoother than before. i also have the FP60 in the gas tank. I will let you know the mileage situation. I am going to put an ounce in the transmission as they suggest. I definitely want to get that to last longer. I'll let you know what I find.

My highest milage vehicle is an '01 Honda Civic, with 150k miles. One very minor issue, other then that it's like a new car still. I'm going to see how long it'll go.

I hate buying a new car, it's like throwing money out the window.

Just anecdotal evidence, but I had a K&N filter on the Mustang for a while, and I noticed that the oil was getting VERY dirty, just looking at it, not with a used oil analysis. I switched back to paper and the oil is looking cleaner again.

We are familiar with the K&N issue. How long do you think you are going to keep your vehicle?

I keep them a long time, 1971 road runner 3 years, 78 pinto 4 years, 79 Mustang 10 years, 93 Cherokee 10, new Tundra in 2002 still have it, I keep them a long time but I put very little mileage, I have always used Conventional oil Two per year OCI, last change was 10/2006 Mobil 1 5w30 truck & SUV with a Toyota filter, now 3700 miles later and 5 months I'm changing it to GC 0-30 this will be my second synthetic oil change I have 36,700 miles on the Truck.

The Mobil 1 5w30 got dark mediately but hasn't gotten any darker, I read that a flush is recommended, I dint do it so my first synthetic change will be it.

Is there anything I should do differently like change more often or go longer, I hate to leave the oil longer in there.

I plan on keeping my Ranger 20-25yrs and the Escape 10-15yrs. I normally only keep vehicles a year or two but I purchased the truck new with intentions on keeping it a long time. The Escape was used so we probably won't keep it as long.

Great responses. Keep them coming. I have been lead to believe that do to people tightening their belts a little, we are not buying new cars as we used to do every other year or so. The car makers seem to tell us this also. They are not selling as many auto's as they used to. Hence the large inventories they are battling to get rid of and all the plant closings.

'87 Jetta - Donated to the Kidney Foundation with 389k miles (running and inspected)

'92 SAAB 900S - Donated to the NHSPCA with 265k miles (running and inspected ... but weak 3speed auto transmission , and rust starting to creep in)

Current Vehicles:
'01 SAAB 9-5 ... 59k miles, wife needs a reliable car as work will have me traveling fairly frequently in the near future ... will run into the ground as long as I can keep sludge at bay

'97 VW Passat GLX, 318k miles, plan on getting 400k miles from this beastie - I love this car (suspension, exhaust, and chip upgrades - fun daily driver)

The car-talk guyes are right - it's always cheaper to repair than to buy.

We buy new vehicles before the warranty goes out. Being retired we travel quite a bit and like the thought of having the vehicles under warranty.

I plan to keep my 00 Mazda (81K kilometers) and my wife's 94 Saturn (94,500 miles) for awhile. I try to keep both in excellant condition. I perform all repairs (keeping the labor cost down). The price of some of new vehicles and second hand, one could afford a mortage on a house!!

It is typically cheaper to keep a car than to buy a new one. Even a new transmission, engine, paint job, and interior work added together would be cheaper than a new car. If you have a car that you like and is reasonably reliable, i say keep it runnin!

Oh, you are so correct!!

I have put 10 per cent of the purchase price of my 2002 330ci back into the car and it runs like new at 96K miles.

It could cost me two grand a year and I'd still be way ahead of the new car purchase game. When a car drives as well as this one does and is paid for, I'd be a fool to go into debt for another Bimmer.

Now if gas hits $4-$5 a gallon I'll probably get a Honda Fit or something like it, but none the less the BMW stays.

I plan to drive my 1995 Toyota Avalon for the rest of my life. As long as it can still perform its duties (i.e. get me from point A to point B), I see no reason why it should be replaced. If it develops any problems, I will pay for repairs.

thunderchild, why do you replace your vehicles at all? By replacing your vehicles, you are spending money that could be used toward your retirement, your childrens' educations, donations to the poor, a house, etcetera.

I have a 2000 Avalon that was my dad's. Got it w/ 78K and now have 125K on it. The only thing that has ever had to be repaired was an oxygen sensor at 85K. No rust and no problems. Plan on keeping it until at least 200K.

My fiance's car is a 98 Olds Intrigue that was her grandparents. It has 160K with minimal repair issues, but has some rust and will need a little TLC soon I am sure, but the engine still sounds and feels "bulletproof." A newer used car is in the future, but the Olds will be used as a 3rd car. I like seeing what a vehicle is capable of, and most are capable of a lot if they are well taken care of.

Well SA, now that I am a little older and have gained some wisdom, I will not be buying cars as I used too. I realize now that I was wasteing alot of money. But hey, when you are young and flush with cash you want to maintain that rep! I have had nice sports cars most of my life and enjoyed each one. But, now that "wisdom" has finally found me I am going to err on the side of sensability. Plus I am at the point I hate car notes and I can do something else, as you pointed out, with that money.
