Howdy,

Just put in M1 Extended Performance 5w30 & spun on a Wix Filter for the first time.

Curious how long (and I do NOT want to over do it...) do you all think I can leave it in a 2003 GMD 5.3L driven fairly hard in Minnesota doing some towing, etc...?

Any general suggestions, experiences or data driven knowledge is appreciated.

How many miles on the engine?

What interval does the Oil Life Monitor normally recommend?

I'd say 7500 miles or the Oil Life Monitor's recommendation, whichever comes first, would be a good starting point that can be extended by oil analysis.

The engine has 70k on it.

I have a "percentage" oil life monitor that reduces on info from miles, temp, load, etc. I usually get 3k on the oil with a 55% oil life left. Just took out PP with 41% left - got nervous leaving it in that long...

Thanks for the answers...

GMC not GMD :-). Also the M1 EP says up to 15k, but there's no way I'd ever go that far...

I am trying to run it for 10K in my 03 Toyota Tacoma V6. My First Oil analysis looked alright, plenty of additive left. I swapped out the filter and topped it off. Time will tell, I am getting nervous though... Has anyone ran it 10K or more miles yet?

Good responses so far - thinking about 6-7k, UOA & a Wix, then follow 2003TRD witk hopefully 10k ?

2003TRD - When did you do the UOA ?

Go by the OLM. Are you trying to extend drain time or are you just wanting to use synthetic oil because its "better".

I'll second Brons2's suggestion. Make sure you do the UOA at 25%. Not doing so will simply be a wild-***ed guess, at best.

What are your thoughts on the PP? I'd like to have seen a UOA on that batch.

I did the analysis at 5K miles, my 10k interval is coming up in March, if I make it that long....

The GM OLM is calibrated for the oil recommended in the owner's manual. So if a dino SL/SM is recommended, changing out M1 EP at 55% is a real waste. But hey, do whatever makes you sleep better at night.

The UOA at 25% at the most sounds like a good idea.

I tried M1 EP hoping to get better protection throughout it's usage, especially in Winter, and to maybe go from 3,500 OCI to possibly (gulp) 10,000 OCI.

Put in the Wix from all of the rave reviews - but may change 'er half the way through to help keep the oil clean...

Dkryan: I really liked the PP - it did run quieted at high rev's and the engine felt like it ran smoother compared to the GM dino oil it was used to. I should do a UOI on it, but I put a 1/2 can of Seafoam (1st time ever in the oil - wanted to clean it out) in the oil 3 days ago and that may skew the results (?) Thoughts ?

I'd go 1/2 the recommended on the first interval (7500 mi). Take it to 10k next time with an oversized filter if you can find one and get a uoa to decide on future intervals.

I've got Mobil 1 EP in 5 vehicles. Most of these vehicles see a lot less than 15k/year, so I just change once/year in the summer when it's nice and warm.

However, one, the Protege5 gets lots of miles. It's a high revving iron block 4 cylinder. I run that up to 15k before a change.

Ex - Do you change the filter in between the 15k oil changes...?

I have done a run with Mobil 1 EP in for 15000miles and it did GREAT!! TBN was 3.6, about the same TBN as my other 5 samples taken at 10000miles with regular M1/AMS&GC. Blackstone recommended me going 17000miles next oil change with M1 EP!! My results are posted in the oil sample section under "98 Suzuki Swift M1-EP 15000miles" dated around the first of this year. There is also another sample result there that was run 15000miles on a Ford Ranger PU with M1-EP that got the same results I did!! I did change my oil filter at 9000miles when I did the 15000mile run.

Wow gudmund !! That's great information.

Just think how that brings down the cost of the EP since it is only 40 cents/Qt more than M1...

go to "Oil Analysis Reports" page 2 "Mobil 1 5W30 EP, 15147 miles, 99 Ford Ranger E85 fuel" dated 31Jan06--- and the sample for mine is on page 6 under "98 Suzuki Swift, M1 EP 5W30 @ 15k" dated 27Dec05

I studied your results and all of the comments. That was amazing what you got out of the M1 EP !!!

Curious what towing a 3,000 Lb. Boat for 3-4 hours each way almost every other weekend during the Spring thru Fall would do to what I can safely get out of the M1 EP...?
