How far can a squirrel fall

I've heard it tastes very good as well.. never had.

Short story:
Back about 20 years ago I was with my (now-ex) girlfriend's family at their trailer up in northern Ontario. It was deep in the woods on a private lake. The whole area was only accessible via old logging roads, very remote. Her grandfather had venison and he made some burger patties the one afternoon using fresh onion and I'm not sure what for a binder, might have been egg or pork. They were the best burgers I've ever had, still not sure exactly what he did to prepare them but they were utterly divine.

Since then, I've done venison sausages, steaks, various attempts at patties myself, ground venison in place of beef in pasta dishes...etc. My kids absolutely love it, so it's a treat whenever we have it.

It's an incredibly lean meat and thus quite good for you, but that does mean it's somewhat sensitive to prep. I'd highly recommend trying it if the opportunity presents itself.

Only meat other than chicken or beef I believe I ever had was veal.. I'm not even sure I like that anymore.

I like sirloin steaks a lot!

I've never really seen the appeal of hunting. Maybe it's just me.

Think Bambi!
A coworker hit a deer in his month-old new car. I distinctly remember him saying "anyone that cries about Bambi never had Bambi nearly total his new car."

True story that my boss tells once a year:
To set this story up, I'll note he served in the military and belongs to the local American Legion. Every memorial day, the local legion members, in full military dress, go to each local cemetery and fire their M1 Garand guns with blanks to honor the fallen veterans. It's three "Ready, fire!" commands with a shot after each command.
So one year they get to a local cemetery and they notice a squirrel in a large tree about 25 feet up, paying no attention to the veterans. The veterans get assembled and one of them calls out "Ready, fire!" When the guns go off the first time, the squirrel does a swan dive all the way down to the grass beside the tree, dazed and confused. After the next "Ready, fire!", the squirrel was sprinting across the long gravel parking lot. After the third "Ready, fire!", the squirrel jumped up a few feet while he was doing full speed to get the heck out of there.
By this time, all the veterans, who were there for a solemn occasion, were laughing as hard as they could for a full half minute after the third shot. My boss said the spectators tried to keep serious about it, but they couldn't do it either.

I'm not going to go into too much detail, but one of the more... amazing scam artists I knew in 2020 used to be appealing to my love of firearms by talking about hunting. Painted all sorts of scenarios about duck and other game hunting on private land. Used to get real excited about it too.

I definitely withdrew, it made me really uncomfortable and I was countering with, look, it's one thing to plink and shoot both bows and bullets at cans, targets, things off in the distance if there is really expansive land that borders two states etc etc but it bothers me the whole hunting aspect.

This person was a pathological liar and there was absolutely nothing true, but I remember that exchange on the topic.

Now I am aware there are plenty hunters on here and that is fine. To that, I would say.. if you are eating what you kill, then I can't see a harm in that. But beyond that? Not for me.

I have no problem with hunting for food, its the trophy hunting and killing creatures for no good reason that bothers me.

Yeah, I understand the conservation aspect of trophy hunting (big game hunts in places like parts of Africa apparently provide a MAJOR injection of capital into these economies that desperately need it, which in turn apparently works to prevent poaching and the killing of endangered species) but I could never do it personally. For food, definitely, and the other reason is pest control, for which I've killed a great number of squirrels. They used to eat my buddy's cottage, so we had to keep the numbers down. They'd also break into our place; they were endemic on the island with no predators, so keeping their numbers under control involved killing them, otherwise they were constantly destroying property.

Sounds like when they do the Bear hunts sometimes. There are rules and stuff, but the hunters lineup to handle the problem.

Baby bears are cute, though.

We hunt wild hogs but not for food. Except for the buzzards of course. They eat well.

Mmmmm Bambi steaks. Squirrels are not so much fun when you hear them chewing through a floor joist then notice a yellow spot in the ceiling. A neighbor had 30 of them removed after much damage.
