How my budgie made off

Parakeets (Budgies) are very sweet and lovable birds. It's possible he went to the first person he saw and they adopted him. I have a very strong feeling he's ok. Hopefully whoever found him will see your posters and bring him home.

Sure, escaped pets often survive and even breed in urban area as long as the climate is acceptable. Imagine yourself out here without supplies, surviving off the land in 100 degree heat without any water. Now imagine you are the size of a parakeet. That roadrunner in the picture would be like a T-Rex to a human. That's by th way the roadrunner I keep seeing on my bike rides.

Parakeets have been seen in the wild at bird feeders so they can survive. I know someone who got theirs back a month after losing it by posting in lost and found, it was caught at a feeder by someone.

I lost a real nice sweet Pionus parrot the same way you lost your bird. I never got it back

Yeah BRZED I think you are going to have to accept that he isn't coming back, hopefully he is surviving out there taking advantage of a wild bird feeder and bird bath.

I remember way back we were at Sequoia National Park in CA, and
amazingly when we were eating out on a picnic table near our cabin in the mountains a little parakeet came down and ate with us and stayed with at our cabin for the entire week we where there, you could tell he had been someones pet and escaped out of a winnebago most likely.

She was over twice his age and he is probably lonely. I was about to give Tinker a new mate, or fellow inmate, depending on your views.

You named him for the great cross country mountain bike racer, Tinker Juarez??

Haha, no. His name is Tinker because he tinkers with everything. For example, his favorite food are fruit budgie sticks, but he always eats only the fruity bits. He plays with everything that can be moved or adjusted. I sometimes hide a treat inside an empty mint box to see him open it.

It hasn't really hit me until today, but it's been 4 days since Tinker got away and now I'm really afraid for him. Thinking about all the awful what if scenarios makes me depressed. We had over 90 °F today. I'm not giving up, but I really miss the little blabbermouth.

Budgies in the wild of Australia make it through hot doubts ... so he may be able to survive more than you think. Wish you all the luck of still getting him back.

Agreed. My friend's budgie, years back, loved being in his cage, even with the door open. When he was tired, he'd bug my buddy until he put the cover over the cage.

I hate hearing about pets going missing. It's not a pleasant experience.

Budgies are amazing little birds. The only place in the world they live naturally is Australia. Of course now they are bred all over the world. The English went wild breeding them over the years.

Unbelievable! Tinker is back. I got a phone call this morning. A woman told me that someone wanted to talk to me. I had no idea what she was talking about until I heard familiar babbling and chirping through the phone. I got directions and drove 11 miles to pick up Tinker. Turns out he was sitting in front of an old lady's front door yesterday afternoon when she came back from a trip to town. She lives a good deal off the highway in the middle of nowhere, no water between here and there, just desert, and found my little buddy all dusty and clearly tired sitting on her floormat. She took him in, gave him water, seeds and bits of apple and banana. She kept him in an empty fish tank covered with a cloth. Tinker is usually shy around strangers and doesn't like to talk in front of them, but this morning he started babbling. The old lady noticed that Tinker kept saying a phone number and so she decided to call. Since Tinker spends much time in my home ofice he has heard my number many times and of course parakeets are little tape recorders. When I offfered the lady the reward, she declined vehemently, so I instead invited her for dinner at a nice restauarant of her choice some time soon, and she accepted that. I will donate the reward to a local charity. I am just so glad to have my little buddy back safe and sound. He's getting all his treats and seems to be enjoying himself. He's still very excited, whether from his adveture or just because he is back I cannot say. In a few days I will look for a new mate for Tinker.

That's AWESOME!! Hearing about him coming home made my day

I had a very good feeling he'd been temporarily adopted by someone. He's used to being cared for all his life,so he went to the first person he saw that he knew he could trust to care for him.

Awesome news! I'm sure he's glad to be back home. That's pretty crazy if he was actually babbling your phone number and the lady called it. Wow, if true that's just wild.

Cross my heart and hope to die! When I was searching for Tinker, I got repeatedly asked if he was chipped. When I got him, the vet said a cockatoo is big enough for a chip, but a budgie is too small. The chip is useful only if someone brings the bird to a vet or a shelter. Tinker has eaten so much he got tired and is now sleeping. He's got his head tucked in and makes happy little noises.

Yes, I remember those little 'noises of contentment' from the 'keets I had in my youth.

I'm guessing they are the equivalent of a cat/kitten purring, although I am told some cats do that when they are nervous/upset as well.
