Home Invasion Robbery today :(

At my previous home, we were going through a period of dopers moving into the neighborhood with the resulting home breakins and other violence. My next door neighbor was a sergeant in the county police. I told him I had a high powered rifle and would use it if someone tried to breakin. He told me that If I did and the intruder managed to get outside before he died, I should drag him back inside and make sure he was dead before I called the police. Through various actions, we were able to clean up the neighborhood but I spent a lot of time in stake outs and other neighborhood activities for nearly a year.

Well, I'd say that states are actually states because people live in them whether there are right to protect life and property or not.

I think that with a 5-shot revolver, if the bad guy (zombie or not) had more than 5 fresh holes in him, there would be a whole lotta 'splaining to do.

Off to the range tomorrow!

Well, had shots fired last night about 1230 am. I live in a quiet neighborhood on the good side of town. Never heard any sirens, and sure enough didn't go outside to investigate. Put on some pants, grabbed my Light, and .357 and checked all the doors, windows, and made sure I didn't hear or see anything suspicious.

Nothing like waking from a dead sleep with Pop....Pop,Pop... Definitely gun fire.

I'm lucky ..sorta..my former industrial smaller urban environment has a fairly passive underclass. One ..maybe two.. drug related murders a year. Maybe one or two "crimes of passion" every few years or so. Most break ins are drug related and violence isn't typical. Now violent crime surely occurs, but it's not (usually) occurring during thefts/break in's, per se~. Now there is a mutually predatory "crime exchange" going on in the background. Crack addicts whining that they got ripped off when their ripped off stash has been ripped off ..so they end up being intermediaries for other criminals in some "feeder fish" sense. The cops, understandably, tend to ..hmmm..not ignore such things ..but put it on a lower priority if no violence is involved. There's not much they can do about lifestyle choices. Now the legit functionals get much more attention since they're not "asking for it".

If this doesn't dissuade the critters ..I'll gouge their eyes out. Gosh I love this animal's total willingness to shed any Lab and go into full Rottweiler mode. She's sorta (quite literally) like Two-Face. Very conflicted at times when she wants to play.

While I have weapons, I'm not at the state of full time tactical alert. So far passive security measures have managed fine.

That's some "passive security" you have there Gary...

I think what he meant, Gary, was that some people choose where they live by the rights affored them. For exampe, I now live in Texas where I am allowed my concealed carry permit and we have the castle doctrine. I used to live in Maryland which is very anti-gun and just a [censored] state all together as far as self defense rights. Lived there for 38 years and will never go back because I value my rights. Hey, PA is not too far off either, now.

In the old days you may have been able to drag the criminal back in the house - but with today's technology they will know you did and you'll be in a world of trouble.

Welcome to Michigan. The law reads you're better to help them than stop them.

X2. Look at right to carry states..no crime..look at non-right to carry states..more crime. Than look at DC - murder capital of the world, but than Maryland is fighting for that title. When will politicians and liberals finally figure out the gun control only effects law abiding folks???? I mean a criminal, by defintion, does not abide by the law.

Mich is a carry state but crime is high in some of the cities and climbing in others. Most noted is where crime never used to be an issue.

I knew what he meant ..just having a little fun. PA ..hmmm..don't know. Traditionally (according to the census) PA has one of the least mobile populations. I can't imagine getting used to a new environment. Every other place has its liabilities in either environmental lottery or some other catch 22 in terms of critters of all kinds.

I hope I can remain functional in the face of prevailing changes. I don't fancy myself as someone who surrenders to things like this, nor do I see myself turning into a reactionary.

This attitude may change. Who knows? A reasonable person is just a reactionary that hasn't been mugged yet.

Gary - I love your last quote!.... "A reasonable person is just a reactionary that hasn't been mugged yet."

BTW, I was not knocking PA, it is a beautiful state, I enjoyed many m/c rides there, the Poconos, Lancaster and even a trip to Philly was nice. I lived about 45mins from PA when I was living in MD. I'd get on I83 and hit the harley plant in York and always hit Corvette's at carlise!

It's got a lot of great stuff ..but it's surely got its issues too. Dense urban/former industrial centers separated by open space. In a de-industrialized economy ..it leads to problem urban centers.

Us too, about the same time...low rumble of a leaky performance exhaust on a V8...woke me up, then 5 quick shots and squealing tires. Had to be within a block. Then about 3 minutes later 3 guys are just walking down the street like nothing is going on.

Then, about an hour later, I hear a loud sharp whistle. A white ML Mercedes pulls into my driveway, somebody runs across my lawn, and gets into the SUV....pulls away. Not sure what to think of it. Did not get that one on video though.

Have you labeled your neighborhood a demilitarized zone ..or live combat zone? It looks like neither from the videos.

Wow. Glad you are okay.

I feel so fortunate to live in NH the safest state apparently in the nation. Don't worry about locking my home.

Another update, we had a break-in attempt over the Christmas Holiday, but my dog got to them first :) Just the evidence of opened window and things knocked down.

And then about an hour ago, a car circles the block twice and pulls over, puts flashers on to fake a breakdown, and proceeds to break into and steal my neighbor's car. Gate was locked so I could not go out there, so I shot video and called the Police instead.

Video here (just a short snippet, I was on the phone after that)-- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P68dBhs_WMU&fmt=18

Be sure to click on "Watch in HD" in the lower righthand corner.

I got a quick still pic on digital Zoom also, but it was blurry due to the long exposure time and my unsteady hand. Oops.

14 gunshots heard between 3am and 4am, likely within 6 blocks (rough uneducated guess, just my ear and living here). Fun fun.
