Whoops, just shot the wife who was digging in the hall closet for an extra blanket.

Speak for yourself. I own firearms and have investigated those "bumps in the night" more times than I can count including one actual attempted break-in. I've shot exactly NO ONE.

It's far more likely for a gun owner to shoot someone who deserves to be shot than a family member or loved one. The problem is that our news media never publicizes criminals getting shot, but one accident happens, and there's 600 redundant stories everywhere.

In my experience, it's the quite the opposite. (I lived in SE Houston for about 5 years.)

Texas law is well and widely known to allow liberal use of deadly force, especially in situations at night and in the prevention of property crimes. For instance, I knew a guy who shot and killed a hoodlum who was attempting to steal his truck. No changes were brought against him, even though the hoodlum was unarmed and not a direct threat to the guy's life. Much of these laws trace back to frontier days, where someone stealing your horse or your equipment (your property!) was effectively stealing your life.

I won't argue the rightness or wrongness of shooting and killing someone in the prevention of a property crime. Yet, if criminals knew they stood a good chance of dieing during the perpetration of a property crime, they'd be a heck of a lot less likely to attempt it.

Criminals know that in Texas, not only do you stand a good chance of getting shot committing a crime, but that Harris County Texas puts more criminals to death each year than the rest of the United States. So, even if you live, it might not be for long.

In my experience, Houston's crime rate was a heck of a lot less than other cities of similar size. I had no qualms about the rough areas of downtown Houston at night (like the area around the University of Houston but maybe not the 4th Ward), while the thought of being in the rough areas of New York city at night give me the chills. The difference? In downtown Houston, the criminals know I just might be packing 17 rounds of hollow point 9mm. And if I am, they know that I've got a permit, I know the law, and the state has certified that I can put those rounds on target. (All conditions of a Texas Concealed Handgun License) In New York City, they know that I'm more than likely unarmed, as guns are only carried by those who don't respect the law.

Just my thoughts...

I know a guy from Plano. He moved to Nevada because he said crime was getting too bad in Texas (or at least in Plano). His choice makes me wonder, though.

Probably depends on where in Nevada. If he moved somewhere in the middle of nowhere Nevada, I'd just about guarantee crime was a lot lower due to far lower population density.

I've been told by a few here that it's just the time before the Holidays...lots of break-ins and vehicle burglaries, akin to us normal folks' Holiday Shopping. That, and the pawn shops get pretty busy with lots of hot merchandise this time of the year also.

I used to love to go on walks with my family, walk the dog, go for a run/bike ride, etc in San Diego. Now, I can hardly do any of that. I was mowing the front lawn this evening just before dark, and I had a bottle thrown at me from a moving car....this sucks. Very glad to go "home" for a few weeks in December. Don't bother breaking into my house while I'm gone, you'd be sorely disappointed...we live very simply :)

He moved to Vegas.

All over crime rates are usually lower in areas with lower population density, but the chance that a person approaching you or your property may well be as high or higher compared to areas with a high population density.

Home invasion style robberies are uncommon here, but are occurring increasingly in the East Bay. That's scary stuff. If something can make me move, it's home invasions style robberies. It's happened to me once when I was living in Boston.

Oh, screw this....I just had a guy try to open a bathroom window in the back of our house, I sent the dog out to get 'em, he took off. Exterior and interior lights on, two cars in the driveway, and a fire in the fireplace, so he had to know we were home. Last night the dog barked inside the house (she NEVER does this unless really spooked about something outside) last night at about 2am also. SO TIRED OF THIS!!!!!

Screw it, I'm going to Academy and getting a handgun, I'm tired of waiting to be victimized. We can't really afford it right now (focusing on paying off credit card debt from California), but it is necessary I think.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!

Have you talked to your neighbors in an effort to find out if you are the only one who is being targeted? Can you check occurrences of crime in your neighborhood online?

There is a reason that both my immediate neighbors are heavily armed and have security cameras.

My sister used to have access to a realtor-oriented program that would compile police reports of car theft/breaking, burglary, and other crimes by address and date and post them on a map...forgot what it was called, need to check and see if she still has access to it.

This sucks

Whoa, your crime rate is like 20 times higher than the one is here at the edge of the city (right along the beach). Here's it mostly public drunkeness, noise nuisance, mail theft, and car break-ins. I am not aware of any burglaries.

You really should move ASAP.

I need to pull up our rental/lease agreement to see if there are any early cancellation fees, etc. The property owner still won't fix the damage from Hurricane Ike (it's not much, but a security issue--fence between neighbor's house and ours, but then again 2x the dogs on patrol haha, and some interior/roof leakage). I really don't feel like spending $3K that I don't have on moving again and just be in another [censored] neighborhood.

PS-- the neighbor's dog is whimpering like crazy right now (she never does), wonder what is up...stupid &^$@ returning for more?

Please keep us updated. I bet you won't be sleeping much tonight.
I had a similar incident happen to me, and it kept happening! I hope you can find a way to move out of the city, altogether. I moved.

I see three possible choices... You could go on the offensive, shore up your defenses, and/or be still.

You really need a gun, Solo. I'd be pretty upset if I had missed so many opportunities.

Go and visit him for a spell. You might get lucky and bag a trophy.

I'd rather have no opportunities to miss...

I feel for you, Solo. This is not what you expected with the move...

Thanks for the well-wishes, not much sleep at all last night. Ugh. Going to talk with the property owner today, and see if we can work something out--- either make her go ahead and pay for the new fence, see if we can add bars to the remaining unsecured windows (classy!), and add some exterior security lighting to the "dark side" of the house. I'm going to be adding some more security cameras, but other than that I don't think we are going to be able to move.

As long as they don't get my oil stash, we'll be okay :)
