Home Invasion Robbery today :(

Normal burglaries are often random but I believe that home invasion robberies, being high risk for the perps, are not. They are organized and planned, and the perps know that you have valuables in your house. So, don't throw house parties where strangers might show up. I also heard of a case where some people came to work at a house for legit reasons (contractors or cable people, I forgot) and then came back to rob the place because they realized it was a good target.

1) Buy one used through the newspaper classifieds. Usually avoids the waiting period.

2) If you have a friend, borrow it until you get past your 30 day period

3) Buy a rifle. usually little or no waiting period.

4) Remember, two shots, center-mass, to STOP, not kill....

5) NEVER shoot in the back, or while they are retreating.

6) Above all, Know your weapon, Know your limits, Know the laws, Know your safety!

#1. Don't support and fight stupid laws that do nothing but hurt law abiding citizens.

I talked to a neighbor several blocks from my house and apparently there has been a string of home burglaries around my neighborhood, usually mid morning when people have left for work. At one home, the perps backed into the garage, shut the door, and literally took everything, including the food (to include half empty milk and juice bottles!).

I'm really thinking the absolute best defense, or perhaps more appropriately named, "alarm system" if you will, is a good dog.

My neighborhood has a fairly active neighborhood watch as well. Plus, there are several of us who are locked and loaded. The guy across the street from me...............WOW. Dude probably has a minimum of 50 hand guns of all vintages and styles, along with a plethora of rifles and other weapons.

Actually, I think the best security system is having a nosy old lady as your next-door neighbor.

Don't under rate strategic assets that are already in place.

Drew,

Same thing is happening here. About 6 doors down, they came into the house, found a gun safe (about 850lb before contents) and spent the rest of the week (the owners were on vacation) cutting open a 12x12" hole in the rear of the safe.

I think this was a inside job (he is a general contractor and hires less than outstanding citizens if you know what I mean...) and the thief's KNEW he was gone and also what was inside the house.

In talking to the police, they said that the more upscale the house, the more likely to be broken in or have a invasion these days. Also he said a Alarm is useless as the thief knows how to cut them out before breaking in.

Bill

We gripe about the nosy folks, but they do keep their eyes peeled - I've lived in hoods like that. Currently this gang wouldn't notice a thing or videotape the burglary for fun and posting on youtube, but not do anything to stop it or call the popo.

I wanna live next to the armed nosy Texan guy....

The guy who shot and killed the perp who broke into his neighbors house? That guy should get a medal IMO!

I believe CO has a castle law similar to that of Texas. I'm fairly nosy with stuff like this. I've called the guy across the street at midnight 3 times this year because he left his garage door up.

One of the benefits of working rotating shift is that there's always somebody at the house. I won't think twice to call the cops (done it before) to report suspicious activity. Plus, knowing your neighbors and what they drive is beneficial to a good 'hood watch.

Not always true about not shooting in the back. Check your local laws and know them well. In my area you are allowed to put yourself in someone elses position. Meaning that say you have a daughter and someone is holding a gun to her head and you are standing behind the bad guy with a gun you are allowed to shoot him in the back :). This happened here at a blockbuster! A guys daughter was working at Blockbusters and the dad was in the bathroom of the store and had a CCW and when he came out a bad guy was holding the store up with a gun pointed at his daughter. He did the right thing and had no charges pressed against him! Plus if you have your license to carry you don't have to wait the 3 days or whatever they are because your background check has already been done.

It is a simple matter to identify and cut a phone or cable wire, but if your alarm reports with a cellular call it is a different matter.

Another "incident" on Friday afternoon, I am in my office with a client, his Honda S2000 was parked outside with the windows down.

Guys do the super-slow-rollby (no-stopping lane, most people do 50+mph here in a 35 zone), they roll down the windows to check out the Honda S2000 and stop just past my driveway, we run outside and scare them off, they take off down the street. California plates (unusual), did not get a good look.

I had my camera on, super-[censored] 320x240 at only 15 frames per second to save space (it has been running since the first incident, records on a loop in 5-min intervals).

Might still be processing-- http://vimeo.com/2269720

I'll put it on YouTube also.

You're having a rough go for having just moved there! Having any thoughts that maybe you moved to the 'wrong' part of town?

:P

In an urban environment the size of Houston, there may be no right part of town.

I'd kinda wonder if a sign on the lawn .... "Critter Cam in use" with (you low life's are under video surveillance) under it would make them move on.

My wife just said something interesting-- "Here in Houston, people don't just break into your house to take your stuff...they break into your house to take your stuff, and THEN kill you".

We're alive, not us...this time!
