High Performance Lubricants Engine Cleaner

Got mine today. Will drain a qt of the LM Molygen this week and add the qt of cleaner and run for a few mos/1K.

We use an ester at a safe treat rate not a solvent. So aside feom filter plugging the concern would be elastomer compatibility. Good there. Next the largest thing to worry about would be in a severely sludged engine. If you dissolve more material than the oil can handle it would likely precipitate out. In that case having a fresh charge of oil would help as you would have an “empty sponge” to absorb the material cleaned. Deposits tend to be acidic and contain metals that could have a negative catalytic effect on the oil. That is something to consider. My thought is even though it should be safe to 10,000 miles there would be more benefits to limit the cleaner interval to 5,000 miles
Is the decision to esters the reason behind 1-quart volume of product? I'm asking because it seems that the majority of these products are limited to around 500ml in volume.

How did you drain just a quart?

Ya know what would be really cool is if you ran fresh oil for 2k miles then add cleaner and run it for 2k miles. Do a UOA for both.
Drain plug on my car is a plastic one that is a turn and lock affair. It's v. simple using a special tool I have for it...back it out most of the way and drain what you want. I'll do a UOA like normal after but decided the before wasn't worth the money. I've done a before/after with the LM flush that's been posted...doesn't really show a thing.

Well my test of the HPL engine cleaner is not going as planned. By time I got access to my sons 180k 2AZ-Fe equipped Solara he had already changed the oil 3 weeks earlier. The dip stick showed no oil need to be added but I put 1/2 quart of engine cleaner in anyways ( I remember when I was having to add oil weekly from my PP 5W30 stash over 70K ago, we went thru my entire stock of SM, SN, SN+?).

Seems like the HPL Engine Cleaner is a good candidate for your son's car, please keep us posted.

Okay! After about 12 hours or so from a very longgggg and occasionally taxing day on the road yesterday, to beat all the New Year's alcohol-induced road nonsense, as well as just to make good time.. I have successfully woken up, cleaned out the car including my remaining 3.5 out of 5 quarts of what I bought from HPI, gotten a Sack Of 10 White Castles, ate them all, gassed up the Chauffeur's Chariot, went to Walmart for some salad and New Year's Eve items, now I finally get to sit down and work on my sugar coma for today. I earned it.

This review and recap (tl;dr - I give this company a 10 out of 10. Higher, if I could) may take several parts, I also have a preliminary review of their Engine Cleaner or EC as they label it, as it has been in my car for about 12 hours/500 miles.. some of them, high speed. :)

**Disclaimer: High speed driving should only be done by either trained professionals, certified nutjobs, or those that just happen to be both. /s Well, maybe not certified nutjobs, but then we can talk about who should and should not even be on the road, let's not derail here and moving on.

Here is a photo of what their engine cleaner looks like. The first thing I noted is, that it doesnt have a multi grade designation to it. It says HP SAE 30 EC and, as I get further into it, these guys are extremely well versed in the SAE J300 spec of designations. These guys know their stuff.

It pours out a dark amber brown.

I will continue in this thread, as there appear to be a few, I apologize..

The address on the bottle is, in fact, where I had to travel quite a distance to get to. Great facility. Great. Super modern.

Oh, they also have this guy's clone working there. (For those thathat watch or have watched Criminal Minds)

Hey, guys at HPI, tell me if you get the reference and why I say that now lol.

I can already see "grit" on my dipstick. It is very fine but it appears to be newly there, this stuff must be beginning a deep clean.

I may change my filter after next long road trip.

I've only had it in my sump about 500 miles and I added in a quart and a half because even Dave agreed, I appear to have an oil leak in my car somewhere.

So, now there are two Daves at HPI that appear to be replacing the Dave at Redline, which has now been acquired by Conoco-Philips and may no longer be King Of The Hill..

We both mentioned OVERKILL (as well as many other things) during my tour of the facility as well as the lab. I mentioned that, as far as I know, he was recovering from some kind of heart surgery and on here less and that we all wish him well. We all agreed and it was mentioned at least twice.

His name came up because he is one of the few that knows what MRV spec is, and HPI is all over it. They have machines where they heat and cool the oil, use infrared lights (laser? Or even regular light. Red) that shines on it to see when it stops moving to indicate freeze.. it was amazing to see.

This was all yesterday afternoon so my memory on some of it may be fuzzy but, wow, these guys.. Thesd guys are the real deal.

Oh, and, apparently, the proper pronunciation of BITOG, this site's acronym, as per Wayne, the site's owner, is not to say each letter, as in B I T O G like B I N G O, but rather, phonetically: buy tahh-ggg.[/] or Bi Tog.[/i] Two syllables. The more you know!

Im interested in this product, but need to figure the breakpoint in shipping... or wait until Im passing through IL. I think it was like $17 to get two quarts to me in NJ, and $27 to get four gallons and $250 worth of euro 5w-40.

Its about 1000 miles or so, depends if you take Rt 80 or if you spend the money to gIf you're passing through IL they would be more than happy to take care of you.

I didn't take any pictures, we were totoo engrossed in product and conversation but Mr. Dave S is an amazing guy and really took time to show me around and even let me talk a lot lol.

A good and productive time was had by all.

I-80 comes in right where you see the sign for 90, unless you already knew lol.

That's what is stopping me from pulling the trigger on the engine cleaner, and why I've been holding off. I'm also not sure if I want to mix in a straight 30 grade oil during the winter months, even if it's just a quart. It sounds like a great product though.
