High Performance Lubricants Engine Cleaner

Second run of HPL Engine Cleaner here, at 447 miles the oil is remaining clean as shown. Likely the first EC run did the job well, as the oil was black by this point. Going to continue the run to the prescribed 2K miles and monitor oil color.

Of note: the truck is parked angled uphill at this time, thus the artificially low dipstick level. It shows full when level.

So here is some limited results of a 5k mile run of EC30 on my Element. The main reason I ran the EC30 was due to sticking rings w oil consumption. The K24 had been using oil since I bought it ~192k miles on it then and 215k now. I did a piston soak and had ran Rislone and Gumout Multi-System Tune Up in the oil before. Mobil 1 HM and Maxlife oils used previously as well as QS. These had helped w oil consumption but not resolved it. Now I have about 800 miles on the new oil and so far it is staying full as I check it weekly. The valve cover off pic is at 1/2 way, 2500 miles of EC30, when the valves got adjusted. It is the same set of lobes as the second and third pictures. The second pic is thru the oil filler hole sorry not so great pic, I got a new phone and it doesn't like taking pics thru there. The second pic was taken when the oil and EC30 got changed and had 5k miles on it. The last picture was taken the day the EC30 was added back in May 2022. Looks like one side of the lobes cleaned up the varnish pretty well but not both sides. Oil that was used for the run was QSFS 5w30 and PP Euro 0w40 went back in. I do have one last bottle of EC30 I was saving in case it uses oil still but thinking of running Rislone w the next few oil changes to work on some more varnish. Hopefully Santa brings me a borescope camera for Xmas and I can get better pics.

I would consider running a full interval of HPL's oils. It has been stated on here by HPL that their oils will offer more cleaning than the Engine Cleaner product. I ran the EC30 in my wife's oil-burner Accord for 2,000 miles and will be running their 10W20 go-forward.

I was considering running this when I replaced the valve cover which had a completely sludged up PCV (see page 1 of this thread over a year ago)....but since the valve cover replacement my oil usage went from about 1 qt every 2.5-3k miles (before the valve cover replacement) to half a qt in 3k miles soon after that.....to 0 movement on the stick in 3400 miles.

So would it be cost effective to run a qt of the HPL PCMO oil mixed with regular oil vs the EC's in the first place then? Then move on to a full run of their oil. Seems like money better spent doing it that way since sold in 6/12 packs and gallons, if the stated PCMO does cleans better.
Not saying the ECs don't work or am dissatisfied, have posted cut open oil filters a couple times w a lot of crud in them from the Honda and my Chevy. But for cost sake and a 5 qt sump it may be worth it.

How new of a vehicle is this cleaner recommended for? Is 12K miles too soon to start to use it to prevent any potential varnishing?

Also, how often do you use this? Every oil change or every X number of oil changes?

I don't think you can approach motor oil "mixing" in the same manner as laundry additives - you can't add an item and expect a proportional outcome.

Unless there is a known heavy-sludge situation, I would just run their oil. Their PCEO 5W20/10W20/5W30 is priced extremely well (for a boutique) when purchased in 4-gal boxes and should be good for the OEM interval or 10K, whichever is longer, with ease.

Made an account after a long time of lurking just to post in this thread! I have an 04 CRV that's been pretty well tended to - it was a family car before me, mostly used for long cross country highway drives. It had a midlife phase that was mostly commuting though, including a lot of that when I got my hands on it proper. I've always been a little obsessive about letting the car warm up before driving it, though I can still tell it's getting a bit gummed up inside. I think some sludge being knocked loose by some ... spirited driving on my part ... in the Olympic peninsula twisties knocked out my VTEC solenoid though. Had to change that out at a campsite, was a whole adventure...

138k miles and going strong, but getting pretty darn varnished and the oil is getting pretty gross. It's also burning a little bit of oil - slowly for it's age - but more than it's previous amount (gonna look at the PCV next weekend, when it comes back over the pass with the husband). I used the BITOGFLUSH15 code just last night to order 5 quarts + a cleaner though, gonna add the clean to the current oil and then change in 3-5k. After that, it's on to the HPL oil outright. It won't be for a few years yet (we've got one more PCS rotation to grind through, potentially overseas), but once we get a home he wants a garage for a project car, I want it for a rally car... and also to overhaul this ol girl. Desperately wanna see under the valve cover when that happens.

Cool to see it have a good effect on a fellow K24, though. These engines are just too darn good. So long as you keep oil in em it feels darn near impossible to get a major fault out of them. Makes me happy to treat the ol' girl right with some HPL oil though! might even have to grab some of the 0W-20 stuff for the BRZ, wanna keep that one running as nice as possible till I get a chance to rally her ;)

There is no point in this kind of thing if you own a vehicle from new and properly maintain it. Engines don't sludge up unless they're improperly maintained. If you want to wait until the oil life reminder tells you to change the oil and then wait another 6 months to a year every time before doing it then use a product to clean it you can do that, but it makes more sense to use the proper oil at a reasonable interval and never have to clean it out. Preventing varnish is accomplished by changing the oil on time.

My vehicles are on a 5K mile OCI. Sounds like I don't need this product. Highest milage car is 40K and lowest is 12K .

Seafoam 1.0 oz. per 1 quart oil sump capacity added to crank case : Anyone read or heard of an engine blowing up after Seafoam was used in the crank case at the recommended dosage ?
