What oil should I run?

Turbo GDI. (Gamma 1.6 T-GDI)

Oil cap says 5w-30.

I live in the Smoky Mountains of NC. Not to crazy cold here, maybe teens every once in a while.

I am considering a 10w-30 because of the thicker base oils.

Dilution is an issue in GDI engines, but I don't know how much of an issue.

Go with a name brand 5W-30 full syn that is d1g2 licensed and ACEA A5/B5 spec’d, such as Mobil, Pennzoil, or Valvoline. Most important thing is to change it often. Don’t waste money on a boutique or “EP” (e.g. M1 EP or AP, Valvoline “modern engine”) oil since you will be changing it too frequently to matter.

Choose your favorite brand of 5w30 synthetic and run with no worries. A more important question is how often you will change the oil. Short tripping a lot should convince you to use the severe schedule in your manual. Highway driving equals a bit longer. Your owners manual will give you the best options, especially since you are in the warranty period.

It get colder than the teens out that way for sure... I'm in southeast Va and it gets that cold every winter. In fact we have had temps not hardly above 20°F a good number of times the past 4 winters. With low temps below 0°F in each of the past 3 Winters in a row. So I am very sure it gets colder than the teens more often above 3k feet in elevation in Western NC.

5w30 any regular full synthetic oil that is not pricey will be good. Dexos gen 2 approved is good as well.

If it wasn't DI I'd say 5w30, but considering the fuel system I'm gonna say 10w. Fuel economy loss should be negligible compared to the potential for better protection in the face of fuel dilution.

Why are you asking me? You have an owners manual.

You should run whatever you want to, depending on your priorities.

If you want to save a little bit of fuel, go skinny.

If you want to save a little bit of wear, go fat.

I'd go 15W40 as a sort of compromise and because I think it tends to be good stuff and relatively cheap, but I'm not you.

what we gonna do now? Omg! Should we offer him Pennzoil platinum EUro instead? But than we risk another tread when he will be asking us "can I use 0w40 because 5w40 is hard to get here and my car manual is not mentioning 0w40 viscosity?"

Since you live in a mild climate, Pennzoil Platinum 10W-30 (with thicker base oil) will offer more chain- and other boundary-wear protection than 5W-30 in a TGDI while still certified for SN Plus (LSPI protection).

You can even go with the $10 a jug Delvac 15W-40 but without LSPI certification.
