2023 Toyota Highlander 2.4 turbo & intercooler.
Haven’t found oil spec.
0w-20 on cap & in manual
Lots very short trips.
The shop we use is old & reputable.. They use M1 AFE 0w-20 & all Toyota Filters.
I plan change oil 5k / 6 months.

Would I gain much switching to M1 ESP X2
0w-20 or……?

If you are going to perform your own OCI, go to WM and you'll see different top tier brands on sale. A lot of the members here like Quaker State, not only it's one of the best, price wise, the cheapest among all of it's competitors.

Mobil 1 ESP X2 0W-20 or Castrol EDGE EP 0W-20 (MB 229.71 approved, API SP licensed, claims ACEA C5/C6 - basically like ESP X2 but less expensive). Don't go with AFE in a turbo charged engine, it doesn't hold viscosity as well as the other two I mentioned. Of course, your vehicle, your choice.

HPL Supercar "Overkill" 0W-20

It's a one-of-a-king motor oil. A 0W-20 with a VW502 (Porsche A40, MB 229.5) additive package. It really doesn't get any better than this.

Doesn't the Highlander come with free maintenance for 25 miles? Which, per Toyota 10k oci, is good for two oil changes. Not sure if I worry now or ever about what brand of oil as long as it meets spec.

The owner's manual tells you the specs. It probably wants API SP or SN-Plus.

If you choose a different oil, will your shop use that oil? That's something you have to ask the owner. If no, then either use the shop, or DIY oil changes.

Plus, don't you have ToyotaCare? It should cover you for the 10,000 mile and 20,000 mile oil changes and you can pay the dealership for the 5,000 mile and 15,000 mile oil changes with the covered inspections/tire rotations.
