HDEO in a Civic, I have a question...

My civic burns oil, I thought about trying some 40wt delo 400le that was on sale for 10 bucks at walmart as an experiment this summer, but I remember reading somewhere on here that if your car burns HDEO it can kill your catalytic converter..

Am I safe to run it? or is it true it isn't good for the cat to burn HDEO?

It's my understanding that it's only an issue with ZDDP levels above 2000ppm, and that the CJ-4 rated oils are designed to be better for emisions systems than prev. ratings

on the Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 it is doing about a quart per 1k, before it was a quart every 1-2k no matter how I drove it, it must not like thin Mobil 1 SAE 30...

I just took a trip home from college, and in a 150 mile trip on the freeway at 3.5k rpm it used half a quart

. It has a oil burning problem at high rpm, its not blowing the blues, its just going somewhere... the more I take it to redline the more it consumes.

It is running great, it doesn't feel like a sick engine at all, but with consumption like this, I foresee a rebuild or engine swap in the next year or so, I will just ride this engine out until it drops.

Sounds like my 94 Corolla. I wouldn't think of running synthetic in it; it drinks it like Charlie Sheen drinks liquor. Mine responds decently to high mileage oils. Give one a try. Since you're in MN, try a high mileage 5w30 for a few oil changes.

Yeah, I just bought 25 quarts of synthetic sm formulation edge, ultra and Mobil 1 5w30 for 4 bucks a quart at autozone, which I feel will be a waste putting into this engine.... now the choice, take it back? or save it?? its all about 2 years old already...

I will be picking up 2 gallon jugs of delo conventional to try out next summer in the Honda..

IMO....you could always try a blended mix of the Castrol with Castrol HDEO, Diesel Dino, Tection 15w40, SM, CJ-4; and a blended mix the Mobil 1 with Mobil Delvac Super HDEO, Diesel Dino, 15w40, SM, CJ-4 for a winter/Summer mix.

Try a 50/50 or 60/40 mix of the "same" family of HDEO and see how it runs.....if you don't like it then you can always change it out.

It might be worth a try rather than sending back all that fine oil you got at a good price.

Castrol Tection 15w40 is on sale right now at Advance Auto....and Mobil Delvac goes on sale quite frequently.

Since your in a cold climate zone....you might be able to get the HDEO Diesel Dino for Castrol and Mobil in 10w30 which would be much better....IMO.

none recommended maxlife yet. Try 10-30 first than !0-40, LM MoS2,and LM oil saver,some MMO.

Burning oil at that rate, don't waste your money on synthetic. Just run conventional. Don't worry about your cat; you've been burning so much oil, it's dead already. Since your car is pre-OBD2, it won't generate a Check Engine light.

If your Civic was ever run hot you have probably coked your oil control rings-I had a '90 wagon years ago that I did an in-frame re-ring on with new rod bearings and a head rebuild, fixed it right up and (AFAIK) it's still running.

I have no idea how it was kept in its prior 190k, So I should just mix some of this synthetic with the dino diesel to get a light 40wt?

Check for sludge build up. It also could be valve guide seals which can be changed with out removing the head. Try some engine cleaners like autor/x or mmo. Dan

I have done a seafoam treatment in the oil, and a Amsoil engine flush, it decreased consumption a lot, but its still there, I am going to try Lubro Moly engine flush at the end of this OCI. It looks rather clean when I look down the filler cap, some varnish, but not visible sludge..

I just found out that the Mobil Delvac is currently on sale at NAPA for $10 a Gallon, with no rebate. Tenderloin was kind enough to post the current ad.

They usually only carry the 15w40 at locations I frequent but in your location....where it gets very cold....they may carry the Mobil Delvac in 10w30 to mix with your stash of Mobil 1 oils for year round use. IIMO....it's worth a shot to see if they do have it available to mix with the Mobil 1 synthetic oils.

BTW...I drove down to Orlando yesterday...made it in 17 hours from Coney Island. I had you mixed up with another poster, Chris, who picked up some Castrol Diesel Dino in SL, on clearance at Walmart.

Brenden, I have a 95 Civic with 200k and it was burning oil at about that rate, 1 qt per 1-2k. It seemed to use more if I drove it harder. A couple weekends ago I changed the valve stem seals - it was not a hard job, took about 5 hours. The intake seals were very hard and obviously not doing their job. Consumption seems to be lower, but it will take a few weeks to be sure...
