I'm getting ansy. I have exactly 5,000 miles and 6 months on this oil change. I was going to take it to 7,000 but I'm extremely tempted to go home and change it today. I'm going to get a UOA, but frankly I'm not expecting miracles for several reasons. 1, it's been winter. And in the morning, it is a real slug, I have to give it a good bit of gas even thogh I don't want to. Second, I had the VC off for a while and I'm sure dirt got in. That, and some other things have me wanting to change it today. Thoughts on this? I have 5 quarts of Valvoline Maxlife 5w30 and a PureONE sitting at home ready to go in.

I think there's plenty of evidence that indicates PP can easily take 7k in NA engines.

I suppose if you really think it's contaminated I'd dump it, but otherwise it would be a waste of good oil.

I also neglected to mention that for a while, I would start and let it idle for 5, 10 minutes in the morning when it was just about sub zero. It's not that it probably even needs it. I just have that itch to get out there and do it. Most of you should know what I'm talking about.

Just for the heck of it,if your using regular unleaded, try bumping it up to the 89 octane fuel. You may be pleasantly surprised. Also could be your cat.going bad? (not the one in the house.)

I would take it to 7k your waisting good PP at only 5,any fuel dilution from the winter idling would have been burn off by now and your filer would have caught any dirt, leave it in.

I know the feeling. At difficult times like this I convince myself to put down the oil filter wrench by thinking about the extra money I spent on a premium oil.

I'll hemm-'n-haw about it for awhile, cuss 'n moan some, then eventually do some other maintenance task that's more needed.

What's that you say? You need to feel a petroleum based product running through your fingers? How 'bout changing the fuel filter?
Tire rotations can help, too. Cabin air filter(ewww)?

We can get through this...... together. LOL!!!

I think weaning off of 3k OCI mentality is like quitting smoking -they recommend to do it step by step.

If you don't feel comfortable, do the oil change now. But try to do a UOA so that you have evidence that your engine can go for longer OCI. I am certain that for the next change, 7k miles will psychologically be easier.

I would do it, it's just oil.

I had to dump the PP out of the Cobalt early (at 4k), because the oil was already at the 6 month mark.

Besides, now is a good time to get a UOA, to see where your OCI is sitting at.

It's never a waste if you learn something....

I would personally change it too, 6 months with winter driving would give me the itch to change it. I ran my last OCI 5k miles but it was all hard driving and mostly all below freezing temps. Even with synthetic, I didn't feel comfortable going further.

Yeah I think I'm gonna go home and change it. We put some old carpeat down in the garage so we can do it in there now, much more comfortable lying on the ground.

Oh it's not that. For some reason, when I first drive it, especially the first time I put it in drive and go, it seems very stiff, like the engine is pushing, but something is resisting. It just doesn't like being cold too much, but a mile or so down the road it's fine.

Besides, gas is already killing me without paying an extra 15c per gallon.

leave it be. You have 133000 miles on a cadavolier . no wonder its sluggish in the morning. I'd bet your cold start mixture valve or i.a.c. is whacked. Its running too rich for a mile or 2. the oil is fine.

Why waste $ on an UOA? It will cost about as much as your oil change. I'd change it before doing a UOA, but that's just me.

Ah hah, I have a secret though.

I would much rather my dollars go to Blackstone than Iran.

Haven't the syn oil fanatics preached syn oil cuts our dependence on foreign oil?

Why waste you $ on syn oil if you change it at conventional oil change intervals, But that's just me.

:D Great analogy!
I quit both in '09. :D
Mobil Clean 5000 was my nicotine gum.I quit that too.
GC 0w30 and M1 0W-40 for 10K miles for now.

I change my synthetic at 5k mi... Here in Canada people think that's a heck of a long time. (somewhere around 7-8k kms)

But since I always scavenge for specials its not like I'm spending a fortune on oil anyways.

I don't even have any synthetic left in my stash (for my own cars) but I have one jug of PP reserved for my dads car (I do his oil changes)
