Grocery shopping: where do you folks go?

Was always told when I lived in the Northeast that wegmans was the best grocery chain.

Maybe so, but down in Texas a newly built HEB does a nice job. Good customer service, decent prices. Never had a problem with them.

We also have Randall's (Tom Thumb), I could take it or leave it. Reminds me of a Florida Publix grocery store, only not as good.

I do not like walmart's packaged meat for the most part, nor do I like their produce.

A household of two makes it worth it to buy any grocery items at costco.

My wife and I are considering buying a month's worth of meat from a local butcher who sells a meat pack.

We have 2 Amish owned discount groceries here that are our go to stores.

We buy a lot of store brand cereals, cost per box I keep under $1.49.
Butter "real butter usually under $2.00.
Canned vegies, normal $ .33 a can.

Otherwise we shop at Aldies & Walmart.

Most of our grocery shopping is done at Hy-Vee. The have outstanding customer service, an excellent selection of fresh fish and produce (what we don't grow ourselves), as well as decent prices. Having quality fresh fish in a fairly small town store is a huge benefit. On occasion I'll go to Fareway-they have a more limited selection but they're good at the basics.

Most of our meats are from a local locker.

I actually pick up lunch from Sedanos sometimes. That particular one makes great latin dishes and the employees are very nice and funny. But rarely do we shop for groceries there. Publix is just a mile away.

We do a big shopping trip about every 3 weeks, and pick up milk, bread, etc as needed.
Aldi - most of the groceries.
Kroger - Specialty, sale items, toiletries and prescriptions.
Sams Club - Diapers and a few random bulk items like paper towels and toilet paper.
Local butcher shop for meat

We avoid Walmart like the plague.

Walmart and the local discount grocery stores mostly (aka the stores that sell it to you at cost plus 10%)

Rouse's, the regional store chain, and Walmart occasionally, for things I can't get at Save-a-Lot. The latter store is often cheaper on many things than is Walmart. Dollar Tree for bread (no, I'm not kidding -- they have brands that are not stale and don't have high fructose corn syrup in them) and cleaning products.

Once in a while I'll treat myself to $$$omething from Whole Foods. And World Market has a lot of good stuff like sparkling mineral water, olive oil, and dark chocolate.

Market Basket mostly. Wife says Hannaford's has better meat selection, but we try not to eat too much meat. We get a couple of items from BJ's (addicted to Riceworks chips) and there is a local buffalo farm which we like to get meats from.

I might swing into Walmart to buy raisens/craisens, but that's about it from there.

Cub Foods and Lunds-Byerlys for the things I can't get there.

Hy-Vee is new and too busy for now to shop at here.

My first stop is Wal-Mart. If they don't have it, I then fill in with other stores.

And its true.. there are some nice Wal-Marts and some dumpy Wal-marts. Some are better off avoided to go to a better one. Prices also seem to slightly vary depending on the items.

We tend to go where the circulars lead us.
Generally: Giant Eagle, Kroger, and Meijer.
We tend to buy a lot of staple type items at Aldi's.
Lately, we also have been going into Fresh Thyme for produce/meat specials.

We have an incredible store called market basket in ma/nh and prices are low, service excellent and quality great.

New England is expensive for most things but you guys are getting ripped off in grocery prices in other parts of us especially rurally.

I went to WinCo a few days ago, IMO any place desperate enough to save a few cents on the dollar that they don't accept credit cards is probably cutting corners in a lot of other places and doesn't have a rightful place in this country. Most notably paying minimum wage to most workers. It really shows when the grocery store workers are rude to you when their only job is customer service.

If I could, I would shop at Whole Foods every time. It's not in the cards right now, maybe some day. Generally I go to whatever is closest and moderately priced. Don't want to go too cheap for the aforementioned reasons.

I shop at IGA (NOT Houchens Industries-owned IGA grocery stores!!! They are not competitive as a "full" supermarket.)



and I shop at Kroger's. Sometimes I do hit Wal-Mart.

I went into Whole Foods a while back...my sister was visiting, which was the only reason. I was treated like I had the plague...getting back to the car, I realized why. I was wearing a T-shirt with "Cherry Bomb-40th anniversary" on the front, and "Disturbing the peace since 1968!" on the back, and my "NRA-LIFE MEMBER" hat.
