Yep, the Lions Club does that in my small hometown. Put a shell of a car out on the lake ice, take bets when it will sink. Person who guesses the closest date wins a small prize ($100?), the rest goes toward charitable causes. Usually goes under in March or April.

Why don't we all live where it's warm?
1. I don't enjoy 90 degrees plus humid 6 months out of the year.
2. Warming up is much more enjoyable than cooling down. Fireplaces, hot showers, warm cars, warm buildings, hot coffee, all great things.
3. Sweating sucks. Also, the B.O. factor is almost non-existent for about 6 months around here.
4. Crime levels are low when it's cold. 0 degrees tends to keep the thugs indoors, away from the streets.
5. Low levels of poisonous bugs, snakes, critters, creepy crawlies, and other things that thrive in warm climates. About the only thing around here that will bite you is a mosquito, and that only occurs a few months out of the year.
6. Christmas isn't Christmas when it's 65 and sunny. Christmas lights look way better with some snow on the ground.
7. Winter Sports!!! Hockey, Cross Country and downhill skiing, sledding, snow-shoeing, etc.
8. Being seen wearing the same short sleeved shirt all year long is weak. Around here we have a whole different set of clothes to wear every 6 months!
9. Surviving through this long, dark, cold winter makes us appreciate the warm months even more!
10. Plenty of time to catch up on reading and other indoor hobbies. This time of year, being outdoors is often relegated to 5 minutes or less at a time.
11. No lawn mowing or yard chores (other than shoveling) from Nov 1st-May 1st.
12. We actually get some use out of synthetic oil and high powered car batteries.
13. Lots of time stuck indoors being bored equates to more time making whoopee with the wife/GF.

14. Ice Fishing! It's super cool to be able to drive your car ON THE LAKE to get to your (heated) ice shack, where you sit on a stool BeeEss'ing with your buddy while eating beef sticks and drinking beer. The fishing itself is secondary. Any fish caught are a bonus.
15. Because of our long winters and excessive snowfall, fresh water lakes are abundant in this area. Meaning we have almost an endless supply of fresh clean drinking water. That can not be said for many Southern locales.

That's only a few. There are a million more.

Some negatives:
1. Going outside when it's -20 is a real pain.
2. Ladies tend to wear a lot more covering clothes this time of year. For men, this is a real pain.
