Google Maps Drive Times Excessive

For the last few months, I've noticed my go-to Google Maps displays excessively long drive times. I checked settings and I am set to fastest drive time and I receive a small message stating this is the fastest route. For instance, yesterday a trip from Dutchess County, NY to Yapank, Long Island was 1hr 52min on Waze and 2hr 27min on Google. I followed Waze and it was accurate on arrive time. Same example today for a trip to Staten Island. Google Maps is 20+ minutes longer than Waze.

THis is a new pattern I've noticed. Anyone know why?

Perhaps Google uses posted speed limits whereas Waze uses actual speed of other drivers?

This is probably the case. I can always beat Google's time home unless I encounter farm equipment, which is often because Pennsylvania... :ROFLMAO:

I've found Google Maps to be driving speed representative, not speed limit conscious in drive times. At least in my area.

Were the routes the same? No chance you have avoid tolls or anything clicked on google maps right?

The routes were not the same. Total mileage very similar. Google keeps knocking me off highways and it would seem to be for fuel savings but my settings are NOT in line with this.

The difference is pretty large. Staten Island today:

Google Maps: 2hr 13 min and 84 miles.
Waze: 1hr 42 min and 81 miles.

Waze is googles navigation app yes.
Maps is just maps.

Even when they show the same route the time is different. Waze far more accurate for me.

Is it consistent across different devices? Your phone, significant others phone, tablet? I have seen google default to "eco" routes lately but I've always had what i would consider a more direct or normal route as an option.

I use Google Maps 15 times per day. It has been accurate.

Waze comes up with some wacky routes, but similar drive times. San Francisco Bay Area.

I am guessing that it has to do with evolving traffic updates in the two systems, for example clearing vehicles following accidents.

Yes. That was the reason for the post. Seems Google has changed something and it may be toward "green(er) road tripping but that is conjecture.

Waze takes your driving style and historical information into account among other things.
It does and it's kinda interesting.... For my drive home, it used to always want me to stay on two state routes until I turn directly onto my street. I don't go that way though and take it a side street that comes in a back way and after a week or two, it started routing me that way.

It does. My biggest complaint with it is how it won't hesitate to route you through neighborhoods with 25 mph speed limits, stop signs, turning, etc. It's probably 1-minute faster though and why Waze routes that way, while I'd prefer to stay on main thoroughfares.

I turned off the eco setting in Maps. It does wacky suggestions often, like suggesting a longer in time and distance route. Often doesn’t prompt what I know to be faster route, and when I ignore it and go that way it comes up 5 minutes faster.
I’d used Waze but hate the interface and the constant nagging about things like “Car stopped ahead “.
