Good states to setup life

What are your career interests for your ME degree ?

Lots of engineers on BITOG that can give some good advice for different career fields / networking for some job leads.
I have been looking for work ever since i graduated last year but very few people ever get back to me and one i had an hour long interview with then they just ghosted me even when contacting them back. Ugh. I am interested in automotive, military engineering. I like testing things

This is normal. When I first graduated it took me also months, and had to settle for anything I can get. You can always find a better job in the future so don't be picky about your first job if you can't find anything.

I know GE Aviation and GE Healthcare has 1 year paid internships where you are expected to ‘your hands dirty’ and not get coffee for the boss. After 1 year is up they are offered a full time position.

Lots of big companies have internships to get your foot in the door and to see who they want to keep.

Similar experience but mine is so old that we wrote on stone tablets still, but when I graduated there were offers from crappy places, or temp jobs at the big places. I was young and single and took a temp job. It was a great experience, and once I got there I found out that’s the only way they hire anyway. They don’t wanna put someone on the books, then find out their crap and have to try to get rid of them. So after eight months they hired me full-time and it was a great first job.

I’ll tell you the same thing I tell my kids who are soon to graduate. Figure out what you want to do, then go get some experience doing that irrelevant or what it takes. If you have to volunteer if you have to take low pay if you have to move to a crappy spot, do it. Realize it’s just a learning experience. Once you’re proficient at it, you’ll have a lot more doors open for you.

Some know that my grandmother recently died. I was taking care of her. I now have the ability to move anywhere. I have lived in ny most of my life. I enjoy freedom. I want to have low taxes and politicians that are pro gun. Warm climates are nice but I’m not opposed to cold either. I want to know where would you live and why or why do you enjoy where you currently live? What are some things i should be looking for when looking for a new place to live!
South Carolina, land of the free.
Pick from the coastline, to the middle of the state capital (Chapin SC) with its 41 mile long DEEP lake. to Spartanburg, Greenville and further west (foothills of the mountains)
If you hold a CWP you can also open carry though few do.
There are no vehicle inspections in our state either, oh the freedom of not having to get your vehicle inspected every year is freaking awesome.
You do not have to register trailers such as boat trailers, no license plates required, also awesome!
Best of all, people are friendly here.

Worst of all, after 16 years we are moving to the coast of NC 4 miles over the SC border because of the community there and excellent deal we are getting on a new home but I much prefer to stay in SC, NC to me might be second best, still low taxes BUT the rub is I am going to have to have annual vehicle inspections AND I will have to register and get plates for the boat trailer.
I feel I am going backwards in time. After living in SC I see no reasons what so ever for vehicle inspections in this day and age.
Ohh... and how about some of the lowest prices on gasoline in the country? Yup, that goes back to low taxes too. Gas is cheap all over except other states tax the heck out of it.

Ps, if your looking for low taxes, dont kid yourself, SC is WAY lower than Florida. I was shocked at Florida taxes, I thought the same thing, we almost bought a home there this past summer, forget that, they are not low and home prices still off the wall for what you get.
We do love northern Florida though. Destin area is awesome (and expensive) Yulee Fl was where we almost bought, love the area and Fernandina Beach nearby... but the homes, for what we were going to get, are built right on top of each other, though in the high taxes, high HOA fees, high CDD fees and we passed but I still like the area and for the right price maybe tempted though most likely not anymore, we still have time as our house in NC is under construction.

Here in SC we are reasonably free, however we have a fairly high income tax and sales tax, and our 2nd amendment rights aren't all that great. No constitutional carry, no open carry, no plans on getting them.
huh??? 2nd amendment rights not that great?
I guess I feel differently having been born and raised in NY, but lived in SC for 16 years now.
You can walk in any gun or sporting goods store in SC and walk out with a dozen pistols if you like, right there and then, no permit needed.
In NY you have to apply for a permit to buy one and that takes months.

How many states have open carry? You are wrong, SC does have open carry.
In SC you can open carry and you can conceal carry. All you need to do is take a class for a permit. Certainly sounds reasonable to me, both my wife and I have CWP's and I like the fact that carrying around guns in public at least the people took a safety course.

I’m not sure I want to know how it could triple like that.

Makes think maybe I don’t want to ever move again.

I tried to explain it, but I understand I am not clear at times, despite English being my first language.. (a little joke)

FL resident homeowners get a $50K homestead exemption. That and the associated laws LIMIT property tax increases to 3% per year. I built my home for $157K. Not every year had a tax increase and none exceeded 3%. I think my home's assessed value is around $250K.

Similar homes are selling for $800K. Although mine is not in pristine shape, so maybe $750K?

So for the new owner of my house, the tax mil rate would be the same, but the assessed value would be $750K. Which is 3x my assessed value.

Could you qualify for a federal security clearance?

The standards are very high and they (FBI) will research your past (advice- disclose everything up front) but the up side is the jobs that require a security clearance are only open to USA citizens with the clearance. So your employer will value you and not be looking at every immigrant with a STEM degree as your cheap replacement. These are usually government employees or government contract employers with good job benefits, often pensions and the like no longer found in the open public sector.

No problem here, mine was tongue in cheek, I don't want to understand how complicated life can be sometimes... I just want it to be simple.

Actually kinda makes sense in your case. Taxes can only go up slowly, get the first bit for free--but upon sale, new owner starts with a clean slate (and thus gets hit with true value).

'round here it's pretty popular to make sure to deny any town appraisers from visiting and updating house value, for fear of tax hikes. [There's also the fear of finding out what you may have added, sans permit...]

I'm kinda glad to live in a lake town, just on the poor side. The mansions on the lake pay the lion's share I'm sure, and I'm happy to let them do so. :) Taxes vary from town to town, and I was all too happy to triple the size of my home and land (and house value) while dropping my taxes when I moved six miles into this town. My old house was close to a lake, so I got hit with that tax, but I didn't have water rights, and learned that I rarely was on the water--don't miss being near the lake at all.

Can't help the OP with job searching, maybe get onto LinkedIn and make sure your resume is up there. Right now the recruiters should be doing the legwork, there's such a shortage of talent out there.

Your literally comparing to the worst state in the Union. I didn't say its awful, and compared to the 20 or so states that have constitutional carry I stand by "its not great".
I wasn’t aware there are around 20 states you can buy unlimited pistols at any one time like you can in SC.

Also 20 states allow you to carry them in public with no safety course required?

You’re right, I’m from NY one of the worst so I guess I didn’t think unreasonable in South Carolina to require a safety course to carry in public and also concealed in public.
I feel this is reasonable but can understand if you came from a state with no requirements how you would feel differently.
I guess this is what you referred to as the constitutional carry

Either way I think now the OP has an educated post with both our responses as too what he is ok with or not 🙃

You have the world’s largest BMW manufacturing plant here in SC

You have Boeing here in SC
You have Volvo here, Samsung and a huge amount of support companies ALL hiring for all kinds of positions, jobs everywhere and every aspect of the field, especially BMW always looking for talent and never ending expansion

Last government contractor that offered pensions that I'm aware of is EDS. And they are long gone.

The downside to government contracting is that the contract eventually goes up for rebid and the company you're working for doesn't win it. Then you end up on the "bench" until you (hopefully) find a new contract to work on. If you're on the "bench" too long you'll be laid off.

College? Chances are you can cherry pick what aspect of the BMW field you are interested in. Engineering Technology ect.
Never mind all the robotic industries

Other than the very restrictive states, there is no limit on handgun purchase qty that I am aware of - however if you purchase 2 or more within a 5 day period the gun store must notify the ATF, and you will likely get a visit from the ATF. . There checking for strawman purchases (you buying a gun and selling it to someone who otherwise would not be entitled to it)

Also 20 states allow you to carry them in public with no safety course required?
There are 20 or so states that have passed "constitutional carry", which is essentially the right to carry in public without a permit. Each state is a little different, some allow open carry, some allow concealed, some both, etc - but you don't need to go get a permit for something that is supposed to be a inalienable right in the first place.

So, IMHO - SC is better for the 2nd amendment than some states, like NY, and NC in fact, but not anywhere near as good as say TN or AZ. were middle of the pack by most all ratings.

Don't get me wrong - I love South Carolina - but I think we could do a lot better in a lot of ways. Still great weather, generally great people and still affordable to live in most parts, with lots of jobs available.

Here in Utah since they have done away with state inspections-it seems bald tires and headlights, tail lights, etc., have become much more prevalent. Have you noticed these things in your state? I worked for a company in Spartaburg, SC. Beautiful area.
