My 07 Ford Fusion v6 has been under free 5k oil/filter changes at the dealer and they have been using whatever conventional bulk they stock. Now those are over (im at 55k now) and its time for me to take over the maintenance.

Our other car that I maintain requires the same 5w-20 but in synthetic, so I stock up on M1 when it goes on sale.

Other than the extra few bucks in cost, is there any reason to not just use the same Mobil 1 5-20 in both cars now? Id rather just go pick up a case (or a few 1g jugs) when they're on sale and not worry about getting half syn and half conventional.

Can (should) I keep using the same OEM motorcraft oil filter? From the research ive done they seem to be decent, but im not against a few extra bucks if it will make a difference.

There is no reason not to use the M1...you can go back and forth between conventional and synthetic, as well as brands, as often as you like. If you're able to buy a one size fits all kind of oil, I would do that in a heartbeat!

Nothing wrong with Motorcraft, but I would shop the sales at AAP and others, you can often get 5 Qts of M1 and a filter (Bosch or M1) for $32. Pretty good price...

You won't have any issues switching from conventional to syn at 55k miles. You might notice the first change is a bit dirtier than usual if the syn cleans out some minor sludge that the conventional left, but I doubt it. The Motorcraft syn-blend is pretty good stuff. (If that's really what your dealer was using)

The Motorcraft filter is good too, no reason to switch.

Ok, good to know, thanks guys.

whats a reasonable M1 OCI? I have no reason to push it (OC are easy on that car and not that expensive) and was just planning on keeping with the 5k intervals for now unless theres a ton of life left in the M1 oil at 5k.

I use M1 in my 96 dodge 1500 with the 318. I got the truck used at 67000 miles and went to M1 15W50 oil and their filter at 70000. I do use heavier oil than most, but at 128000 miles it may use 1/4 of an inch on the dipstick per oil change. One a year at 7500 to 8500 miles.

Motorcraft filters are excellent filters, but if I was going to extend OCIs with M1 I would go with a little better filter-Pure One/Synthetic, M1, Bosch D+, RP, or Fram Ultra/XG would be excellent choices. You don't HAVE to go with a better one, but if the syn dislodges anything that the dino has left behind you'll catch it. UOAs are the best way to determine OCI length-you may be able to go 10K.

I second this motion. If it's not burning oil in any noticeable quantity, or you have leaks on your driveway, I think you'll be fine.

IMHO, 55k is plenty early to make the switch-I'd say go for it. What I'm worried about is switching over the '03 Camry to synthetic at 148k.
