GM now saying to use 0w40 in 21-24 6.2L

I was thinking 0-40 so people would have to go to the dealer for an oil change, or to buy their expensive 0-40 dealer oil that you can't find anywhere else.

This discussion has gone stupid. Amazon has the M1 supercar oil. They did raise their prices 15% last night, but the oil is readily available. If not, Amsoil 0W-40 is readily available too.

Hey. I am "realizing" something now.....rereally more a question:

Recently in another thread, someone was speaking about Supertech 0w40, as they had come out with the viscosity..........I would say that BITOG is fairly chronologically correct........so did Walmart know of this long before?

At Amazon, that Mobile 1 0-40 is $10 a quart, shipped and sold by another Amazon seller I've never heard of. And Amsoil is $58 per gallon on Amsoil's website. Readily available... I guess. But the discussion hasn't gone stupid. You could say that about any of them. Should I not participate anymore? That's fine.

While the Supercar (former ESP) is pretty expensive at $10/qt, the Mobil 1 European FS 0W-40, which allegedly now meets DexosR can be had for $25-30/5qt. Much better.

Reasonable.

See what Wemay said about that oil (LSPI) …

Well, good as Amsoil is - questionable choice bcs of serious warranty risk.
The FS is approved and under $30/jug …

Yep, putting DexosR 0w40 in seems like the best option. Once the powertrain warranty expires, then experiment and adjust after some UOA's for those that wanna nerd out.

Amsoil 0W-40 AZF is $41.80 wholesale price per gallon and yes, maybe wait until that rock solid warranty is complete, depending completely on wording.

Speaking of which, can someone cut and paste the EXACT GM WORDING? Thanks.

Regarding warranty; they say "Dexos or equivalent" in some owner's manuals. This one says, "Dexos1 gen3": https://contentdelivery.ext.gm.com/..._Denali_OM_en_US_U_85516381B_2023SEP25_2P.pdf

I have a buddy with this L87 in the AT4. He's doing exactly as outlined by the recall, DexosR 0w40. For our perspective, no reason to deviate from what GM says unless someone proves otherwise. If GM says, hey we have a bearing tolerance issue and you need to run a dexosR like the 6.2L corvette. Why would an owner ignore this recommendation? I don't think he's looking to dedicate time and energy into determining what 0w40 will exceed the recall literature.

It's a bearing tolerance issue?
From the recall, "The connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components in these vehicles may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and engine failure."

Interpret that as you will.

Stopped by Wally World yesterday, M1 FS 0w-40 was sold out. Bunch of the other M1 offerings are on rollback again. ESP and Euro flavors still full price.

I guess I would interpret that as some sort of finish or heat treat mistake, or metallurgy issue.

Nor would GM be able to prove the oil caused the failure. Yes yes, perhaps giant hassle, yada yada, etc but the point remains, GM created and is in a tight spot. Not the owner (yes wallet open, flopping in the wind) nor Amsoil. GM.

Use a proper oil of your choice, but using Amsoil 0W-40 is not a "serious warranty risk".

Thanks for the links and cut and paste!!

Another way to look at it, "Can you prove to me amsoil is 'equivalent' to DexosR?"
