Changed the oil in the '24 Tahoe today. Out came dealer bulk 0W-20 and a Delco PF63 filter with about 1,405 miles on the interval.
This change was performed by the dealer I bought the truck from. I do not make a habit to visit ANY service department or oil change shop, but I wanted this oil change to be on the books as GM offers a "first" oil change on all new vehicles and it's billed out under the Warranty Line. Would hate to have to deal with flack if there was a motor issue and then GM sees no "warranty" change performed. You allegedly have a year after delivery for this service. And on a side note, man did the lube tech leave the truck dirty. Oil on the door panel, steering wheel. What a miserable experience some folks must have to routinely deal with. I made them run the truck through their detail department.
This fill came out dirty. I know, I know color/condition isn't any measurable quality, but NONE of the M1EP 0W-20 ever looked this dark after 3-4-5k. I cannot imagine a 13k mile motor with already a handful of OCIs would have any dirt to be cleaned. Any rate, out it came today. Back in went Mobil 1 Euro ESP 0W-30 and a Delco PF63 filter.
Without a doubt the top end is much quieter. I can imagine that 3.5 HTHS is helping. I don't see any downsides to running the ESP line of 30/40wt on these Gen V motors. I will probably just standardize on this one product and also run it in the 2005 Suburban. After reading up on the different approvals they carry, and the tech in these lubes (from other bright folks on here), I am not worried one bit I'm neglecting it by not having a Dexos1 G3 or explicit API SP approval -- and to boot, I bought and have a GM Extended Warranty until 110k miles.
I also want to mention that this post is not intending to throw shade on the folks who prefer the 0W-20 in their GM Gen V, I am just sharing my experience. But for folks on the fence of a xW-30/40, either Euro, HM, Dexos-rated... GO for it.
Overall I am pleased. I can imagine this will benefit me with summer towing when the little 5.3 is being worked. Here's some videos of it running with the hood open. All I can hear is the DI injectors and HPFP... and some PCV noise from the catch can.
And an obligatory Borla exhaust video. I would say the exhaust is fully broken-in and does sound good. It does the truck justice.
Hot idle is about the same. Still very pleased with this truck 13k miles later.
