She found an 07 Mustang V6 convertible w/55,000 miles. She can get it for $11,000 out the door. We drove it around yesterday for a few hours and it drives and runs flawlessly and solid as a rock. Are there any known issues with these cars,or any particular thing I should look for? Are these cars reliable in the long haul?

On the surface of it... that SOUNDS Like a good, decent deal. Any issues that you see with the car? As to longevity/reliability.. unless im wrong, the later-model 'Stangs were reliable. This one is the V6.. Preliminary vote says GET IT. Other members need input, i dont know this car all that well. My Fox-body is solid but its a 5.0 and not a convertible.

Explorer/Ranger engine. Solid. No real persistant problems other than it is a bit underpowered for it's fuel economy comparitively speaking. (compared to a 3.7 Mustang that is) There are the usual "problems" associated with cutting the roof off of a unibody car. But the Mustang isn't really significantly worse than the Solara or Sebring IMO. The Solara's 3.3 V6 produces the same hp, only about ten less ft-lbs of torque, and gets better mpg. The Sebring's 3.5 produces about 25 more hp, virtually the same torque, and is significantly behind in mpg.

IIRC, this generation (05+), was designed from the outset to be a convertible.

Not really. The basis for the chassis design is the Jaguar S-Type. The front frame rails, transmission tunnel, fuel tank...etc... are all similar to the S-type. The rear suspension is significantly different of course but structurally it's similar to a car that only came with a roof. I'm not saying it's bad. Quite the contrary. It's as good if not better than cars like the Camry Solara Convertible.

Well considering the only other options are the sebring convertible (likely to be quite unreliable, poor fuel economy, and not well put together. Oh come on, the last gen sebring had the most problems per 100 cars than any other model). And the solara which is boring. The 4.0L Mustang isn't the fastest car, but it's got enough power to be fun. I loved the 2007 convertible we had before.

It's a shame what they did to the Sebring. The original Sebring convertible drove like an Eclipse Spyder mixed with Accord coupe powered by a V6. Over time it got fatter, dumber, and the soft touch surfaces turned into polypropylene straight from Tupperware. It got a bigger/worse engine (2.7) and just plain bigger engine (3.5) They ruined the car sometime during the Daimler era and continued to let it slide during Cerebrus' reign. The Solara? Well, it is a Camry....shrug My intention wasn't to disrespect the 4.0 Mustang. Just if you try a stoplight Grand Prix vs a 3.7 Mustang, 3.6 Camaro, or well, pretty much any current V6 powered family sedan, you're going to come up short. If you are not worried about looking at Altima or Camry 3.5 taillights running away from you, the Cologne 4.0 is as solid as they come.

If the lack of power is the only thing stopping you, I would go ahead and buy it. I doubt your GF is a speed demon, and if she is, there are turbo kits made for the car. My buddy had an 07 V6 coupe with a single turbo and it made close to 400whp, which yielded high 12 second quarters.

At an open track weekend I was at, a guy used a rental auto 4.0L mustang to qualify for his race license. It was very impressive.
