I wouldn't call it durable.
Remember the '88-'94 Continental? Abysmally bad car. Head gaskets would fail with alarming regularity (and if that didn't kill it, the transmission would die, then the rear air suspension would fail, then the PCM would go belly up....)
The Windstar had the same head gasket/cracked head problems
Ditto the Taurus/DiSable. I don't know why anybody even got a 3.8 Taurus over a 3.0. More torque maybe? Same horsepower. Vulcan will run forever on reasonable maintenance.
It does seem to be more problematic on transverse engines but the first few years of the 4.2 Essex in the F-150 had terrible gasket failures. All over the engine.
