Getting a new engine from Hyundai

He was No.2 in M division. Suspension guy. However, Hyundai/KIA abandoned chasing cheaper version of 3 series after sales debacle of G70/Stinger. These engines were on the market far before he was in H/K. Maybe things changed for the better now.
Ahh. Well, Hyundai went after the best!

They did.
G70/Stinger was the same attempt as Lexus IS300, Infiniti G35. The problem with all of them is they don't try hard. They send one model out, sales is whatever, mostly bcs. those models don't have racing pedigre somewhere, no enough marketing, they chicken out, and next models is some vanilla project. Lexus IS is best example. IS300 was close to the 3 series, next one was already blended for a driver who wants a "sport" sedan, but also a typical Lexus. The same happened with Infiniti, and the same happened with G70/Stinger.
But poaching several engineers doesn't buy you know-how. It helps, but it takes time and investment. And Hyundai chickened out like others.

German engineers didn’t have anything to do with these engines.
Only time German engineers helped Hyundai (before acquisition of Kia) was work on their diesel engines. They messed up big time and Mercedes got involved to save the day. It was still crappy engine from performance/consumption perspective, but didn’t grenade like Toyota diesel engines at 40-60k miles.

BMW engineers, particularly No. 2 from M division, wasn’t engine guy, but suspension guy. That is why best thing on G70/Stinger is suspension, everything else is crap.

As for engineers in general, they change companies. Hyundai has big R/D operation in Frankfurt. That is bcs. access to prestigious technical universities and workforce.

Now, I would really like to know how are H/K engine close to German? Opel for example went down not bcs. it was independent, but too dependent since 1981 on GM. That is approximately when decline started.

The first passenger car diesel engine Hyundai made was a licensed VM Motori copy. The same engine was used by Daewoo. That one didn't have any BMW or Mercedes involvement and was replaced with their current offerings. it resembles more FIAT JTD engines than anything else.

They also have one derived from a mitsubishi, replaced the timing belt with a chain, and used in the vans.

The European Hyundai had 2.0 some 20yrs ago. Wasn’t derived out of anything.
I didn’t say engine had Mercedes parts Wouldn’t be junk that it was in that case.

that's the D engine you refer to. it was a pure VM Motori. The engine itself was fine, but everything bolted to it failed. it also came in 3 cylinder form as a 1.5 and as a 2.2 in the santa fe. the same engine was used by daewoo and opel, and the chevrolet cruze at first.

I had a Sonata with the 2.4. Mine used about a half quart of oil in a 5K OCI, always used 10w30 full synthetic, it was allowed in the manual for temps over 0F. The weird thing was, it would use the oil in the first 1500 miles of the OCI and then it wouldn't move again for the remainder of the OCI. I ran one OCI to 8000 because we were moving and back and forth all the time, and it still didn't move off the half quart mark on the stick.

I sold it off with 95K for multiple reasons, my wife hated it because it was a 6 speed manual, and the engine issues certainly figured into it as well, didn't want to get stuck in traffic or anything like that with a spun rod. I also hit a deer with it and the front clip was a bit distorted, and it needed a brake job as well. My BIL has a used car lot and he needed cars, he made me a very fair offer so I sold it to him.

The engine used diesel like a drunken sailor. I know taxi companies ordered bunch of Elantra’s, just to ditch them as fast as possible. You couldn’t get them below 7ltr on average.
